An alleged text exchange between Musk and Gates has been published on the Internet.
Musk seems to say that the texts are real, but he [Musk] did not leak them.
Here is the alleged text exchange...
In the text exchange, which couldn't be independently verified by CNBC, Musk asked Gates: "Do you still have a half billion dollar short position against Tesla?"
To which Gates replied: "Sorry to say I haven't closed it out. I would like to discuss philanthropy possibilities."
Musk shot back: "Sorry, I cannot take your philanthropy on climate change seriously when you have a massive short position against Tesla, the company doing the most to solve climate change."

Musk can’t both be a “genius”—and actually believe the CC crap.
If in fact Gates did short Tesla stock, we do not know when that transaction (or multiple transactions) took place.
Tesla peaked in November 2021 at more than $1,200 a share.
Its Price/Earnings ratio at that time was at least a staggering 250!
Then, Tesla briefly crashed all the way back down to $700 in February 2022.
Since that low, it has rallied back strongly to $1,000 a share.
Based on the alleged comments that Bill Gates made, Gates seems to indicate that he has made money on the Tesla short, and that he wants to donate that profit to a charity.
I hope Gates is upside down on the open shorts.
I think the charity and the stock positions are two different things.

Musk I think wants to do things more safely and change and make things we are already doing cleaner for environment.
Maybe gates is planning his own electric cars and knows he can get the government contracts and has a plan to put musk out. We have a bunch of really rich people trying to take each others money..

Gates says he is sorry he has not closed his short position.
That means Gates is sarcastically saying that he thinks Tesla will continue to go down in the future, but, because he [Gates] is a nice guy, he will give his short profits to charity.
I think he was soliciting Musk for a charitable contribution for one of his pet philanthropies, and Musk said I won’t deal with you if you’ve shorted my company.
I’m not sure why Musk even cares about this. Gates’s position is a tiny percentage and if Tesla keeps going higher in the years to come Gates will be punished.
Gates is jealous.

Sounds a bit high to me.
Tesla profits were just $3.3 billion in 2022 Q1 (Page 23).
