Stagger Lee/Stagolee was a folk song that was around decades before them. The real incident happened in 1895. LLoyd Price hat a #1 hit with it in 1959.

Harry Chaplin - Taxi
Marty Robbins - El Paso

I’m going to go with Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Honestly, the first time I ever heard the song, I was 8 years old and we’d just moved to a house that overlooked the St. Lucie River in Stuart.
Stormy, foggy, rainy day, and the chop was high on the water.
The lyrics really hit deep.
ANd I’m not sure if this counts, but I also love Penny Lane by the Beatles.

Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours? One of the most epic lines in any song -- ever.
