A cancer survivor is vowing to untangle the twisted mystery of why almost 100 people associated with a New Jersey high school have developed “extremely” rare malignant brain tumors.
Al Lupiano is among the 94 former staff and students from Colonia High School in the Woodbridge Township School District who have been stricken by the devastating diagnoses in recent years.
“I will not rest until I have answers,” Lupiano, 50, declared in an interview with NJ.com and the Star Ledger on Thursday. “I will uncover the truth.”

Lupiano told NJ Spotlight News that the school is located less than 12 miles from the Middlesex Sampling Plant — a site that was used, under the direction of the Manhattan Project, to crush, dry, store, package and ship uranium ore for the development of the atomic bomb.
He alleges that some contaminated soil was removed from the site when it closed down in 1967 — the same year Colonia High School was built. Lupiano is now wondering whether some of that soil ended up on the school grounds.
Today, Colonia enrolls approximately 1,300 students, with many said to be “anxious” about the possible cancer cluster.
“We are looking at possible things that we can do between the town and school, and they said they will look at anything we come up with,” Mayor McCormac said.

I recall reading a paper YEARS ago about a research facility which produced cancers in workers...but the site was covered up by the government. I can't recall details.
However, radiation is such a problem in NJ that the state has a website for it:
https://www.state.nj.us/dep/rpp/rms/rad_cleanups.htm
"Staff of the Bureau of Environmental Radiation provide technical support to the Site Remediation Program (http://www.nj.gov/dep/srp/) on the investigation and remediation of radiologically contaminated sites in New Jersey. The Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP) program (http://www.nj.gov/dep/srp/srra/) applies to these sites with one notable exception - the LSRP cannot approve and implement any work regarding the radionuclide contamination without first obtaining Department approval. Sites contaminated with radioactive materials in New Jersey include former manufacturing facilities, sites that were part of the Manhattan Project (the first nuclear weapons program), other weapons program (such as the BOMARC Missile site pictured) and various mineral/mining operations. Regulations, guidance, and a spreadsheet available for download assist LSRPs, consultants and responsible parties in complying with cleanup requirements."
It's certain that this school likely resides on a former research or dump site, similar to San Francisco's Treasure Island.

The OP story at the NY Post source has many more details about the cancer cases
A simple Geiger counter would solve this concern.
Thanks for those clickable links. I was going to do just that and got distracted in another comment. My bad.

You must have had a science class. That’s too much knowledge for the general public. They can only believe The Science. /s
(You are not wrong).
I wondered about the absence of that, too.
Reminds me that I need to get off my butt and get one before they become a part of ‘Putin’s price hike’ (/s).
I haven’t eaten Pacific seafood since 2011.
Indeed strange....but why the same type of tumor? Is it possible that many other tumours developed in other unaccounted for associates? Lots of sleuthing needs to be done
Wow. The Manhattan Project.
It's a result of ionizing radiation.
Cerebral Neoplasia In a recent publication, Roguin talks about 31 physicians chronically exposed to ionizing radiation who developed malignant brain tumors. Among them, 23 were interventional cardiologists, 2 electrophysiologists and 6 interventional radiologists. All of them had had chronic exposure to ionizing radiation (between 12 to 32 years). Among the most frequent tumors were: 17 cases (55%) of multiform glioblastoma, 2 cases (7%) of astrocytoma, and 5 cases (16%) of meningioma, in the most of the cases 85% (22 patients) the tumor localization was left sided, 3 cases in the right side and 1 case in the midline (Table 1) [10]Biologic effect of ionizing radiation
Agreed, but it will be an uphill battle for the families of the victims.
I believe this article story already solves the “mystery”.
I wish that I could recall the details of the paper I’d read years ago. It was in NJ in a nondescript building housing research element of the MP, as I recall. Unrelated to this case (as far as I know), but germane to how radiation sites exist in populated areas, particularly NJ.
This is going to nag at me and cause much distraction over the weekend...

It’d be interesting to read if you find it. Maybe pass it on to that guys fb page if you can find that.
The Star Ledger article did state that the school had been checked for radioactivity and none was found, save some safe sample rocks in the science lab.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t get a gift from the site that is radioactive and they forgot its source and meaning. They may be touching it every day Other discoveries have occurred in the 80s and 90s
Exactly!
Regards,
Yes, it’s everywhere, even in St. Louis:
I know someone who is terrified of a cancer diagnosis - kids used to play in Coldwater Creek all the time, oblivious to the danger until they starting getting cancer later on in life. It became impossible to ignore the shared experiences, or for the data to be hidden.
A Geiger counter indicates presence of ionizing particles but not energy (intensity) of particles and, of course, does not show historical data from 30 years ago. Other technologies needed.
Miscalibrated NIKE site radars?
