An LGBTQ reporter who goes by "they/them" pronouns is peeved that MSNBC "misgendered" them during a segment on women who face online harassment.
On Friday, Washington Post columnist Taylor Lorenz and 19th News reporter Kate Sosin sat down for a joint interview and spoke about how viral attacks have impacted their work as well as their personal well-being. Sosin later took to Twitter to object to being labeled a female.
"I really did not want to get into this, but I don't know what to do. It's been five days since @MSNBC pubbed this piece on gender-based harassed facing journalists and misgendered me. They won't fix it. I have asked. @19thnews has asked and asked," Sosin tweeted.

People have a sex, not a gender. If you were “born female” you are a she. No changing this. Forcing others to call you he/they or any of that other bullshit is oppression.

The sender was a family member who works in the academic community. I am assuming the "gendering" text block was added automatically by the institution's email server, as this person is a strong conservative who grew up under communism.
Anyway, that's neither here nor there, other than that it got me thinking all kinds of things.
Like for example, what happens if a white transsexual is 'misgendered' by a POC? How does the complaint process go then?
I was thinking this also: what if — when I meet a person who introduces him or herself along with a "nonconventional" (or "nonobvious") gender specification — I stop the conversation right there and say "I notice your gender preference is one that I may have trouble remembering to use; for my own safety and yours, I need to know before we go any further what sort of consequences will you impose upon me if I accidentally misgender you?
Another thing I was wondering was this, what if I state that I wish to be referred to as "that n-word."
Many other interesting ideas flooded through my mind as I contemplated the brave new world toward which we are all hurtling, now that Rush Limbaugh is no longer here to hold these practices up to ridicule.
How does they know what gender they is?
Is they a biologist?
Oh good grief - make it stop, please.
What if "normies" start putting a disclosure at the top of each email, right under their gender preferences, that reads something like this:
"As the sender and originator of this email, I hereby state, warrant and affirm that — as a Believer in the Rights of Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Thought — I will not take any action, legal, or physical, against the recipient of this email if it should come to pass that recipient misgenders me or anyone else."
