I hit a deer today with my car

Posted on 04/04/2022 5:13:07 PM PDT by SamAdams76

Well it finally happened. After decades of commuting to work during the dawn and dusk hours of the day through heavily wooded areas, this morning, my automobile struck a deer.

I always looked forward to seeing the deer during my commutes, usually standing around in meadows and fields, sometimes crossing the road in front of me. Always took care to avoid them when I could, though I did have a close call here and there when one hurtled across the road right in front of me.

This morning was different. I was near the Easton/Westport line in Connecticut on a rural road when one leaped in front of me with no time to take evasive action.

At around 35mph, my Subaru Outback sent that deer in a total 360 across the road where it skidded on the pavement to a rather inglorious landing, leaving a skid mark of fur.

The deer was not killed (yet) but was rather angry. I came to a complete stop and that deer got up and attacked my car. That is to say, it hobbled, obviously in intense pain, and smashed its body against the driver's side of my car. I had to drive down the road a bit until the crippled deer limped away into the woods.

Unfortunately the deer is probably a goner. If it did not die later of internal injuries, it is likely being made a meal of tonight by the local coyotes.

The damage to my Subaru was surprisingly minor. The grille and front bumper cover was cracked pretty good in several places but no hood damage at all. Headlights fully intact and still working.

The local police had no interest in the matter as nobody was hurt and there was no deer carcass in the road to deal with. I called my insurance company and they told me that this happens all the time and that they are glad there was no other personal or property damage involved. I'm to take my car into a body shop tomorrow morning for an estimate but in the meantime, the car is totally drivable and other than the cracks in the front part, still looks brand new.

I guess I was lucky. Although I can't say the same for the deer. I wish they would not jump out in front of cars like they do.

I’ve hit two white tails and many more close calls. the last one killed my Jeep Liberty - went thru the grill, radiator and knocked the engine off the motor mounts. Insurance totaled it.

"How is it that aircraft ( looks like an f18?) has its vertical tails on the flip side of the cockpit windows? Not trying to photoshop us are you?"

No, no photoshop (researched it in case someone asked). More images:

https://thumbs.gfycat.com/GenuineFortunateAmericanbadger-mobile.mp4 "During an air show practice at Lethbridge County Airport, CF188738 experienced a loss of thrust from its right engine while conducting a high angle of attack (AOA) pass at 300 feet (ft) above ground level (AGL). Unaware of the problem but feeling the aircraft sink slightly, the pilot selected maximum afterburner on both throttles in order to overshoot from the manoeuvre. The aircraft immediately started to yaw right and continued to rapidly yaw/roll right despite compensating control column and rudder pedal inputs. With the aircraft at approximately 150 ft AGL and about 90 degrees of right bank, the pilot ejected from the aircraft. The aircraft continued in a tight descending corkscrew to the right prior to hitting the ground nose first. The ejection system worked flawlessly, but the pilot was injured when he landed firmly under a fully inflated parachute. - https://www.reddit.com/r/aviation/comments/4dvbd4/cf18_crash_at_an_airshow/

My equipment rep hit a moose in a square body suburban at less than 50. Put him in the hospital and totaled the truck. The moose came right through the windshield. Worst thing about moose is their eyes don’t glow at night in the headlights like other animals.

Driving home at 3am on an otherwise empty two lane highway, I came upon what must have been the result of a deer pulverized by a truck. The roadway was bathed in blood as far as my headlights reached.
Most eerie thing I’ve ever seen and sometimes wonder if it was a mirage.

Thanks for the reply sir. I found a CF18 photo from underneath with the gear up and it looks like the nosegear door has both of those black shapes.

Also, thanks for the articles, and glad to hear he got out.

I took my kids to an airshow when they were little, hoping to get them interested in aviation, and we saw a solo performer bore in right in front of us, out of initiating a split-S too low. (+ possible accelerated stall and possible G-LOC )

Needless to say, it had the opposite of the intended effect on my kids interest in aviation.

I've been taking 136 all the way to Westport since 2013. Then I get on Metro North and go into Manhattan.

2 1/2 hours each way so 5 hours a day of commuting.

I've gotten used to it. Plus I get to read on the train.

One of my wife’s cousin’s husband spent about $3000 tricking out his pickup, was driving to work one morning, came up over the top of a hill, and hit a cow.
Messed up his truck and all the expensive work he had just had done, and broke his arm. The cow ended up in the bed of his pickup, went right over the top of his truck.

I did that, too. Steered into the deer at 60 mph and broke him into three pieces. Totaled my car, and the deer carcasses were gone before the highway patrol got to the scene.

I’ve hit deer 5 times hard enough to cause damage. The worst was in my old CRX 1.3 on I-24 in Southern Illinois. Big buck, just ran across from my left @ full tilt. I was doing about 70 mph, got slowed down to maybe 65 @ impact. An antler came through the windshield just to my side of the rearview mirror, broke off, and fell into the interior, but overall the car scooped up and flipped the deer right over the car, leaving mud splatters on the roof of the car. Hood trashed, windshield smashed, headliner seriously dented, nearly totaled, but State Farm agreed to pay for the repairs. Crazy aftermath I’ll post later...

Had 2 VERY close calls this past year. I hit one years ago and did thousands of $ worth of damage to my van.

That deer just APPEARED, standing in the middle of the road like he had dropped out of the sky. CRASH!

It is just filthy with deer around here. I guess THEY can get Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin in the woods. COVID hasn’t reduced the deer population one bit!

We like to refer to deer as “speed beef”. Very lean red meat.

They run like the wind and jump 6 feet easily from a standstill.

When a deer is butchered at the ‘airborne’ home the backstrap is the first thing we cook. Little medallions of joy!

Living in Pennsylvania, I have hit several deer in my life. Those that were not killed immediately, I could dispatch quickly with my handgun so they would not suffer.

A moose is a whole different breed of cat, as you no doubt know. The combination of weight and height makes for nasty collisions.

I nearly took one out one night as it crossed the highway in front of me. Fortunately by swerving into the opposite lane, I missed him by a good half-foot.

Lots of deer in New England particularly Connecticut. There needs to be a significant weeding. Does too.
