Hungary's pro-Putin PM Orban captures strong lead in vote
WBBM Newsradio ^ | April 3, 2022 | Associated Press

Early results from Hungary’s national election on Sunday showed a strong lead for the right-wing party of pro-Putin nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban as he seeks a fourth consecutive term.

With 43% of votes tallied, Orban’s Fidesz-led coalition had won 57% of the vote while a pro-European opposition coalition, United for Hungary, had 31%, according to the National Election Office.

Although vote counting was still underway, all signs pointed to a clear endorsement for Orban's populist style of governance.

The contest was expected to be the closest since Orban took power in 2010, thanks to Hungary’s six main opposition parties putting aside their ideological differences to form a united front against Fidesz. Voters were electing lawmakers to the country’s 199-seat parliament.

Yet even in his home district, opposition leader Peter Marki-Zay trailed the longtime Fidesz incumbent Janos Lazar by more than 11 points, with 74% of the votes counted there. It was a discouraging sign for the prime ministerial candidate who had promised to end to what he alleges is rampant government corruption and raise living standards by increasing funding to Hungary’s ailing health care and schools.

In a surprise performance, radical right-wing party Our Homeland Movement had garnered more than 6% of the vote, exceeding the 5% threshold needed to gain seats in parliament.

Opposition parties and international observers have noted structural impediments to defeating Orban, highlighting pervasive pro-government bias in the public media, the domination of commercial news outlets by Orban allies and a heavily gerrymandered electoral map.

Big win after months of the media shilling for the opposition.

The election wasn’t a referendum on support for Putin. Orban isn’t “for” the war or supporting Putin against Ukraine. Quite the opposite. Hungary has supported sanctions against Russia in the past and they have good relations with Ukraine and are absorbing their share of war refugees. The election was about nationalism/ anti muslim invasion-ism and anti-homosexual indoctrination of kids in schools-ism. The Hungarian people showed where they stand.

Thanks!

Very few people, outside of Hungary, know that nation's history. Actually, most people in the USA don't know much of anything at all about Hungary. So I just thought I'd post a very tiny history lesson on that nation, her people, and Victor Orban.

Orban, in the shadow of Sandor Petofi, one of Hungary's most revered fighters for freedom ( in the 1840s ) and best, most beloved poet, encapsulates Hungarians yearnings for freedom in his poem: RISE UP, MAGYAR. The last line of that poem reads as follows: We swear unto Thee*- that slaves we shall no longer be!

* The THEE in the poem refers to GOD, which is mentioned earlier in this poem.

It's a VERY stirring poem and one which all Hungarian children must learn, in school, to this day. And for those Americans whose ancestors can here from Hungary, it is still taught in the home.

I'm old enough to remember when Patriotism was taught in American schools.

And every Thanksgiving, children would dress up in Pilgrim and Indian costumes for school plays, to reenact the first Thanksgiving.

And children wore scary costumes for Halloween, but nothing lewd. And political correctness was never an issue.

And kids could go trick-or-treating in the neighborhood without adult supervision.

Does the article show in what way Orban is “pro-Putin”?

We share the same memories!

Sadly, those days are long gone and instead, even in the most elite private schools, kids are being "taught" alternative ( BS ) history, and things that only a parent should discuss with them and NOT at very young ages.

"Pro-Putin", my ass. Orbán, like Trump, has been very supportive of Ukraine and publicly condemned Putin's warmongering. Hungry joined the rest of the world in denouncing Putin's invasion. In fact, only five countries voted NOT to condemn Putin. The ONLY countries that have been "pro-Putin" are the usual crowd of totalitarian dictators like Kim Jong-Un in North Korea, Bashar al-Assad of Syria, Putin's puppet Alex Lukashenko in Belarus, etc. (Though China, Venezula, and other countries claim to be "neutral" and refuse to bad-mouth Putin. Hungry is NOT on THAT list, either)

Neither is Orbán some kind of "authoritarian" leader. This seems to be the new favorite buzzword of the leftists, and the same crowd accusing others of being "authoritarian" have no problems when RAT politicians in the US try to force everyone to "get the jab" or lose their job and be banned from public life. Apparently THOSE tactics AREN'T "authoritarian" in their eyes. Oh, the irony!

Fun fact about Hungry: like nearby Poland in eastern Europe, the Christians in the country are overwhelmingly Catholic. Protestants exist there, but their numbers are in single digits. (the far-left scandavian countries in Europe that love socialism, abortion, and gay marriage have the opposite demographics: most the Christians in those countries are overwhelmingly protestant and belong to the "State church", whereas Catholicism is extremely rare in those places) Of course, this doesn't fit the narrative of anti-Catholic FReepers that majority Catholic countries love socialism and that putting protestants in power will prevent that sort of thing, so naturally, they will ignore this thread. :-)

Maybe “right-wing” compared to the Communists who used to run Hungary.
