Caffeine could be a valid option for treating some ADHD symptoms (May replace drug use)
Medical Xpress / Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) / Nutrients ^ | Mar. 29, 2022 | Pablo Ramos / Javier C. Vázquez et al

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is a psychiatric pathology. Current estimates suggest this disorder affects between 2% and 5% of children in Spain, and up to 4% of the adult population.

Controversy surrounds the treatment of this pathology. For this reason, experts are continuing to investigate different opportunities for patients diagnosed with ADHD.

A team has studied the possibility of including caffeine in the therapeutic arsenal used to alleviate some of the symptoms of ADHD, given the controversy surrounding the use of some medicines derived from methylphenidate, among others. The study concludes that a prescribed consumption of caffeine can increase attention and retention capacity in adolescents and adults suffering from this psychiatric disorder.

"The therapeutic arsenal for alleviating ADHD is limited, and there is a certain degree of controversy around the use of some types of medications and stimulants, especially during childhood and adolescence," explained Javier Vázquez.

This is the first systematic review that has been carried out, including at the cellular level, with results linking caffeine consumption in different animal models of ADHD with an increased attention span, improved concentration, learning benefits, and improvements in some types of memory.

"This substance improves these types of cognitive procedures, and increases capacity and flexibility in both spatial attention and selective attention, as well as in working memory and short-term memory," emphasized Vazquez, who added that controlled treatment with this substance "doesn't alter blood pressure, and doesn't lead to an increase or reduction in body weight."

These benefits therefore clearly indicate that caffeine may be a therapy indicated for the treatment of ADHD. "Our results reinforce the hypothesis that the cognitive effects of caffeine found in animal models can be translated and applied in the treatment of ADHD in people, especially at young ages such as adolescence," the authors concluded.

Try weightlifting or bodyweight exercises.
It’s been noted that tired muscles have a positive effect on somebody with ADHD and their ability to concentrate.

I am doing forestry work for a fellow just like that.

He gets on one thing and can not, think ahead. The nest moment, he is all over the place and nearly always making the wrong decisions in a panic after he realizes that he messed up.

I cant deal with it and told him he needs to get help. He has not and I wont work with/alongside with him.

I believe some of it came from his upbringing. Raised up getting everything he wanted from his parents.

Yep.

I manage to consume 4-500 MG of caffeine before noon most days and am super productive until it really wears off and I have trouble concentrating, downside is if I consume any after noon I have a hell of a time sleeping.

Huh.

Years ago I had a pediatrician tell me that to see if a child had ADD he would give them a cup of coffee.

If they calmed down, then they were ADD.

It they didn't he would look for some other reason they were having trouble.

It seemed kind of weird at the time but maybe he was just really ahead of the curve.

Every time I see Pelosi I can picture her sitting on a bench with Newt Gingrich pushing ‘Climate Change”. I’d like to see just how much money all the Climate Change fanatics have invested in solar and wind power companies.

Coffee doesn't always do the trick, and if you add milk and sugar as I do, might have adverse health issues. But tea, coffee and the first coca-cola and later one without cocaine derivative have been utilized worldwide to help with focus. Meds, if they do work, are often life changing.

I know a few people with ADD/ADHD. Coffee settles them down. This has been known for quite a while.

I can relate. Over my career I’ve been accused of being unfocused and praised for my ability to concentrate intently.

That wasn’t me.

I would do crazy levels of risk management. Then, usually make the right decision.

That was in my career—which moved along great. My personal life was a mess.

Getting help and modest treatment, I was able to correct the balance.

I always tell people to not wait on getting assessed by professionals. It enhances the good qualities and helps you understand the bad parts.

Those of us with ADD have been self medicating with coffee for years.

Or worse, as in my case, self medicating with alcohol. In my 20s, it was the only way to calm down and feel "normal". Finally got it diagnosed in my 30s but, thankfully, soon outgrew it and tossed the Ritalin.

Another thing (and I hate to bring it up, but I believe it’s true), try to be sure that you have good, clean bowel health. I’m convinced that toxins can build up and contribute to OR compound ADHD brain fog issues. As a kid/teens/20s, I developed a horrible habit of holding it because I disliked any bathroom that wasn’t at home. Very strange, not at all healthy, and something that kids might do without parents realizing it.

I have had dyslexia my entire life. As an adult it only noticeably affects me when I’m tired, mainly in the transposition of numbers. Coffee fixes the mental fatigue.
