Co-hosts of The View slammed actor Will Smith for slapping Chris Rock onstage at the Oscars Sunday night, calling his shocking outburst 'immature and childish,' but Whoopi Goldberg broke ranks to defend the actor, saying 'sometimes you behave badly.'
The 53-year-old actor who won an Oscar later that evening marched onto the stage and hit Rock in the face, then returned to his seat and yelled, 'Keep my wife's name out your f---ing mouth!' after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair.
The bizarre outburst led to swift backlash from millions of viewers, including The View co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Ana Navarro who discussed the ordeal on Monday, calling it 'toxic masculinity' and a 'crime of assault.'
But co-host Whoopi stepped in with a different take.
'I think he overreacted…I think he had one of those moments where it was like G.D. it, just stop,' Whoopi said. 'I get it, not everybody acts the way we would like them to act under pressure. And he snapped.'
Meanwhile, on the Today show, host Craig Melvin slammed Smith for aiding 'this long-held perception that men of color can't control their rage and anger.'
'It was really disappointing,' Melvin said. 'If you're rearing a boy, especially in this country, you spend so much time talking to our kids about keeping your hands to yourself and this long health perception that man of color can't control their rage and their anger and to see someone who's been that beloved for decades - it was troubling on so many levels.'

On the positive note…. Nobody go shot…
Thanks, Whoopie. I’ll remember that if I ever have the misfortune to run into you.

Got shot that is…
Well, we know what Ilhan Omar said about the 9/11 hijackers, so this should not be surprising.
Whoopsi is the poster girl (can I still say girl?) for behaving badly.
-—and we know now that WSmith can’t throw a punch——swings like a girl-—sorry gals.
Seriously. Who is so obsessed with race that it's the first think they think of?
It's a sickness.
Whoopi only dated white guys as far as I know.
Exactly right. It perpetuates the narrative that Black men are thuggish and violent and not thoughtful or with the ability to abide by civil decorum standards.
I think Smith over-reacted, if not staged.
And he played Muhammad Ali in a movie. SMH.
Poster Child..Poster Person for behaving badly that is for sure
This may not meet approval here, and frankly I don’t really care for either of Will Smith or Chris Rock, but if someone cracked a joke about my Mom when she had a serious illness (cancer), I’d have done a lot more than b##### slap the jerk. He’d have ended up in a hospital. So I do not hold this against Will Smith.
I guess he must have had a masculine stunt double.
Yeah, he bitch slapped Rock. Insulting him in many ways. You notice the soy latte types are the ones in Hollywood protesting this the most. I hope next year brings snatching weaves and cat fights!
He let’s other men screw his wife, but not insult her?
Twisted set of values there.
Other FReepers have brought up the fact it might have been staged. I was thinking “if that is the way Will hits he’s a tad bit weak for a man”. I would have expected Will to have Rock on the floor after going up there but Rock seemed hardly affected.
Rock acted like a punk who wouldn’t DARE say the same thing to Smith and his wife off stage. He thought he had special “comics” immunity on stage there. He was wrong.
Cats are getting along with dogs…. I agree with Whoopi. Good for Will for defending his lady’s honor
