It's good that you can because a lot of other weight thinkers on the subject have reached different conclusions. Why countries fight limited wars rather than pressing for total Victory was the central problem for von CLausewitz who concluded famously that war is a continuation of politics by other means.
Thomas Schelling - one of the greatest thinkers on the subject in modern times and one of the fathers of nuclear deterence theory reached similar conclusions.
War isn't about killing everyone until you get total surrender (which even then isn't total surrender). It's about the political goals of those running the war.
