Diesel Prices

Can someone please explain the price for Diesel? About a week ago I filled up at a local station in Louisville, KY. The listed price on the outside board said $3.49 a gallon. While filling up I looked at the price on the pump. Shock. It was $3.79. I complained and they did give me the difference, but that time the price on the outside sign was bumped up to $3.79. Last Friday I was at my local station in Greeneville, TN. The price for regular gas was $3.09. The Diesel? $3.79. Seventy cents more for Diesel. I can only thank SloMo Joe.

You will find the answer here:

https://www.eia.gov/petroleum/weekly/distillate.php

Supplies have fallen like a rock since before poopy pants took office but accelerated after.

Look near the bottom of the page for the current stocks vs. five year average range.

Same story when it comes to a pleasure craft boat or a commercial fishing vessel.

The lobster boat burning commercial diesel puts out a different color exhaust. The Coast Guard will give you huge ticket if you get caught with it in your sailboat or weekend fishing boat/yacht.

Diesel fuel and #2 Home heating oil are almost the exact same thing chemically speaking. In fact if you run out of home heating oil, you can run down to the local filling station and fill up a jerry can with diesel.

Heating oil seasonally is at peak demand in January/February. So, that MAY have a effect on diesel prices in the winter.
Just my educated guess.

There’s more heat energy per gallon in diesel so at least you’re getting that. But the govt mandated emission controls have really hurt the diesel efficiency and added maintenance cost. In the good old days you had 20:1 compression on diesels, now it’s much lower like 16:1.

Federal is 6 cents additional per gallon diesel vs gas. States are all over the place on how they do it.

The Federal excise tax on Diesel is 6 cents per gallon more than for gasoline (24.4 vs. 18.4), but here in Texas, the state rate is the same for both fuels: 20 cents per gallon.

In my former home state of California, the rates are higher on gasoline than diesel, but both are pretty high: 51.1 cents per gallon for gasoline, and 38.9 for diesel.

Other states may well reverse those rates as you suggest, but it’s not uniform at the state level.

And I always called dyed diesel “marine diesel”, since the only place I ever saw it sold was at a dock. Interesting to learn that it’s available for off-road land-based uses as well.

Agree. I remember when diesel was about half the price of gasoline.

Jet fuel is basically kerosene. Comes in several grades; JP-4, 5, 6, A-1, etc.

For one thing, the federal excise tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel fuel.

Greenies never liked diesel. Now, they’re going after gasoline to force us into expensive golfcarts.

I still have my Mercedes diesel car and I remember the days before the above events and diesel was lower priced than gasoline.

That was a long time ago! We had a couple old Mercedes diesels in the family from the 60s until the early 90s (when they finally died). Diesel used to cost $0.25/gal when gas was $0.35/gal.

The oldest one was fun to drive on the freeway. No-one would ever tailgate you for more than a few seconds because of the smell of the exhaust, and it would occasionally "roll coal" all by itself, too, so some people would get a large dose of black, oily smoke. It did get 40 mpg on the highway, which was impressive for a large sedan, but it only had 60 hp.

Mr. GG2 just paid $3.75. $100 to fill his behemoth Ram 2500. He’s still grousing about it.
= = =

Well, that 2500 can carry enough cash to pay, I would think.
