Sen. Mitch McConnell is trying to thwart former President Donald Trump's efforts to shape the GOP, The New York Times reported on Sunday.
McConnell and a team of allies have, for months, been leading a behind-the-scenes campaign in which they try to recruit potential Senate candidates who could go up against Trump-backed picks. It's an effort to gain a GOP majority in the Senate, The Times reported.
The campaign consists of phone calls, meetings, and polling memos, the paper said.
In December, Graham suggested that Trump will continue to shape the political sphere and party leaders need to find a way to work with him to avoid getting ostracized.
"If you want to be a Republican leader in the House or the Senate and you don't have a relationship with Donald Trump, you cannot be effective. So I hope we'll get on the same page here," The South Carolina lawmaker said.
The Republican party can't "grow" without him, Graham said last year.
And among Republican voters, support for Trump still remains strong. An October poll conducted by Quinnipiac University found that 78% of Republicans want to see Trump in the 2024 presidential election. That number went up from May by 12 percentage points.
McConnell, however, believes that Trump is "losing political altitude," The Times said.
Since leaving office, Trump has been endorsing candidates running for office across the US. (snip)
Those endorsements do not sit well with McConnell, per The Times, who characterized some of his picks as "goofballs."
A few of McConnell's prospects, who were not identified by The Times, declined his invitation to run for Senate. According to the report, they did not feel comfortable with the possibility of angering the former president.

He’s more wrong than the others because of his incestuous ties to China. If PDJT gets into power once again it will threaten — likely ruin — the livelihood of his in-laws’ businesses there with the CCP. He cannot afford to have Trump win.
I haven’t read Peter Schweizer’s book yet, but have heard excerpts. Scary. WHY isn’t Turtle’s ties to China on every GOP’s lips every time there’s an interview? It’s blatantly obvious that he’s sabotaging Trump for personal gain.
Mitch’s wife is a member of a Chinese family who are owners of a multi-billion dollar shipping firm based in China. Maybe Mitch is a bit compromised.
He cannot be elected majority leader again if the GOP gets the Senate.
So is McConnell.

McConnell-—worse than run-of-the-mill deep state. The turtle is working to keep his wife’s family out of jail for double dealing with the chicoms. Can’t think of a better word than “dirty” to describe this rino piece of work. It’s more than clear that his wife’s clan couldn’t stand up to a close look and electing Trump will probly guarantee that it gets it.
With dim Sen Lujan (NM) on his back with a stroke Mitch is running the Senate-—he has 50. But can he get anything done——nooooo he’d rather bellyache.
But with only 50, no one is doing anything in the Senate. What would you have them doing?
McConnell is just as willing to cheat in the primaries as the dems are willing to cheat in the general election. I suspect McConnell was part of the plot to steal the election from Trump in 2020, in exchange for a power-sharing arrangement on committees. The GOP doesn’t want their money train stopped anymore than the left does.

McConnell said the majority runs through eight states: Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and New Hampshire (which feature vulnerable Democratic incumbents), as well as Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania (four states where the incumbent Republican is retiring). As long as the party nominates quality candidates in those states and avoids the likes of Todd Akin, Sharron Angle, Richard Mourdock, and Christine O’Donnell (from the 2010 and 2012 cycles), the minority leader expects to run the table and is bullish on winning the majority.

Angle and O’Donnell lost winnable Senate races in Nevada and Delaware, respectively, in 2010, a Republican wave year. Akin and Mourdock similarly tanked winnable races in Missouri and Indiana two years later. Only in 2014, another GOP wave year, when a fed-up McConnell began intervening in primaries to weed out bad candidates, did Republicans finally recapture the Senate majority they had lost eight years earlier.
The minority leader is prepared to do the same thing this year, particularly in Missouri, where disgraced former Gov. Eric Greitens is a leading contender in the GOP primary. The National Republican Senatorial Committee is neutral in primaries, a directive of Florida Sen. Rick Scott, the chairman. But the super PAC aligned with McConnell, the Senate Leadership Fund, is poised to fill that gap — and utilize the massive war chest at its disposal against Greitens if polling suggests intervention is necessary.
So far, McConnell is keeping his powder dry. “Let’s put it this way,” he said. “If I were inclined to intervene, I certainly wouldn’t announce it.” Greitens has pledged to vote against McConnell for Republican leader if he is elected to the Senate this fall. Meanwhile, in just about every targeted state other than Missouri, McConnell sees virtually zero reason for concern.

Kentuckians were in a no-win situation. That kook Alison Lundergan Grimes would have done all kinds of damage. So they held their nose.
The GOP did it to us in Arizona forever. The Dems help by running their dreks. They gave us a guy who wanted no border at all and routinely swindled hospitals against Jeff Flake, and a far left lush who carpetbagged into different congressional districts, running against McCain. Her commercials showed her western dancing. They make it where you hold your nose or really get torched. It’s horrible.
