What is purple fuel? Is it dyed to identify it for some stated purpose?

In some countries the gasoline is dyed different colors in order to distinguish say ‘agricultural’ gas from ‘recreational’ gas from ‘industrial’ gas. The gas is the same but the taxes are diffferent.
A family member from Europe was telling me that in Ireland if you are pulled over, the Police will siphon a sample of the gas from your tank. If you have agricultural gas in your car, then you will receive a much bigger fine than just whatever the initial infraction makes you liable for.

Dyed fuel is usual untaxed here in US. Trucks are the usual target of enforcement, but technically you’d get grief if you tapped your home heating oil tank for the diesel car or pickup and an officer found you running dyed.
