I just tried Shell’s EV charging hub — and it's not the future I want

A gas station-style forecourt isn't necessarily the best option

I’ve always been of the opinion that you should bring EV chargers to the people, rather than asking people to come to the chargers. But admittedly charging hubs aren’t very common, and until very recently they were all too far away to experience first hand.

But at the tail end of last year, Shell opened up its first EV charging hub in Fulham, in West London. It’s still pretty out of the way for me, and the trip involves driving into the heart of the U.K.’s busiest city from nearby Reading. But it’s not so far that I couldn’t check this out for myself, just in case I’ve been totally wrong about EV charging this whole time.

And yes, for those that didn’t know, Shell the oil company is also in the EV charging business. So is BP, which is all really weird to think about.

According to Shell the Fulham hub uses 100% renewable energy, with on-site solar panels contributing around a quarter of its needs.

It was a very painless experience, only really hampered by the fact the price was so high. £0.49 ($0.66). I’m used to rapid chargers being more expensive, but Shell Recharge is the most expensive I’ve ever seen. Back home a rapid charger will cost me £0.30 to £0.35 ($0.40 to $0.47) per kWh, depending on which company’s chargers I’m using. It’s not just London-centric inflation, either, since that is an all-too real problem in the English capital.

According to ZapMap, which lists the vast majority of available chargers, nearby rapid chargers were charging no more than £0.39 ($0.52) per kWh.

Last I checked, it was $1.25 a foot for 12/2 copper [50 foot roll]. Yikes!!

Setter is a communist. He thinks government creates jobs and innovation and pays for everything. I am not kidding. This is by his own admissions.

I live in hurricane land. Electricity out for a week is common with hurricanes.

The EVers will capture unicorns, and pipe their farts into the local electrical grid in case of a long-term outage...

They EV types claim we will all have solar to charge with and solar will always be available. I guess the sun never sets and it never gets cloudy when you’re a child.

Most charging is done at home while the owner sleeps.

One of the more clueless comments I've seen for a while...

If you purchase the optional 220 volt charger from Tesla (which I think costs $500+, it takes about 8 hrs for a full charge, i.e. overnight).

People will eventually starting blowing up the distribution transformers that way. Adding a ton of load without contacting the utility companies.

The distribution system will overload if things keeping going in a non linear fashion. A cascading failure would be real fun...

What if your area loses power during the middle of the night?

How long does it take to charge, then?  winking face

My tank of gasoline retains its full charge with or without the electrical grid...

Flat out liar. Link to the post where I said that.

What I said is the gov’t subsidizes many industries so they remain competitive with other countries who are subsidizing their own industries like china and Europe. If we don’t subsidize our high tech industries they will be at a huge disadvantage. For a guy that supposedly has 300 patents you are truly dads when it comes to the real world.

The $52 billion dem and republicans bill signed last summer to give to chip companies for R&D and innovation and to bring them to the US

Amazing how little he knows about what he bought and signed on for.

“The key problem is that EV charging, even at ultra-fast speeds, is a time sink. You can’t just roll up, fill up, and be gone within a few minutes. You have to plug in and wait, and that’s something we just cannot avoid. Even the fastest charging cars need at least 15 minutes to recoup a meaningful amount of range - even longer if you want to charge your battery to the 80% mark.”

Control of the means of production (energy) is the goal of the leftist Green Energy movement that is based on the global warming hoax. Control over the freedom to travel is a part of their goal. EV is easier to control than petroleum-based energy. Control over every aspect of life is the goal of the left.

Meaning if this is our future we'll need four to five times as many 'gas stations' as we have now.

I am probably getting a tax refund this year so to you the government paid for my groceries.

You communists seriously need to take a civics lesson, as I have never met a communist who really wanted socialism. They always want wealth they have and control and just think the government will do that for them.

I don’t live in Cleveland, and with the high crime rate there, I wouldn’t want to live there either. I live in a small city in Central New York State. At my age, an electric car would be more of a bother.
