Weekly Garden Thread - January 29-February 4, 2022 (Grow a Medicinal Garden Edition)
January 29, 2022 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 01/29/2022 5:54:08 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

You may be no doctor and no herbalist, but you certainly hit the nail on the head. However. Tumeric? Gone from that pitiful list. What a shame.

Take the (Herbal) Plant Personality Quiz!

https://www.traditionalmedicinals.com/quizzes/plant-personality-quiz/

I am Mushroom, Dandelion & Nettle! Grounded. Strong. Restorative.

However, I am VERY allergic to Nettle; I break out in blisters when exposed. Ouch! ;)

“Folks in my neck of the woods are becoming disenchanted with conventional medicine and returning to herbs”

That was one of the reasons this subject was suggested for the week. We are all suffering from, ‘Medical Advice Malaise’ these days. :(

I plant many of these in my yard in the Pacific Northwest. Lavender, rosemary, thyme, and even oregano shape into lovely evergreen shrubs. Yarrow, calendula and lemon balm spread like crazy if I let the flowers go to seed, so they are more work. Mint…only in pot! Garlic I plant in October. I’ve got 6-inch shoots right now. They lay dormant all winter then grow when it warms up. I harvest in June.

She narrowed that list down to just 20; Turmeric is in her LONG list. :)

We drink a Turmeric & Ginger Tea for the inflammation and arthritis benefits.

I grow a lot of echinacea in my bee garden - every time my friend gets sick, I tell her to come over and pick some and make tea with it.

Meanwhile, we are waiting for the rains to return.

Oranges are ripening nicely - I got fewer this year b/c the gardener trimmed back the tree too much. Sweetest oranges ever and I don't have enough this year to send to family on the East Coast:

One of my Christmas amaryllises is finally blooming. Better late than never!:

Planting more dianthus this year than ever:

And stock:

That is beautiful!

I grew basil one year and even made my own pesto - was delicious.

Haven’t done it for a while and have taken to buying pesto at the store ($$$).

I may have to start growing my own again (better flavor and better product) - now where did I put my food processor?

I am echinacea, raspberry leaf and camomile. I grow camomile from time to time and wish I knew about raspberry leaf before now!

basil is simple to grow and there are over 30 kinds, all taste quite different, but dead head the blooms to keep the plant from going to seed and dying.

I learn so much on this thread! I’ll bring over some stuff I saw on another thread about elderberry. Supposed to be an immune booster and decongestant/cough reliever. We used to have our own wild elderberries growing by what is now the barn so they have been gone since 2000! Would like to get some plants and plant them nearby, would like my own supply. Would like to figure out which is the best variety to grow. I was surprised to see so many sources for elderberry syrup, capsules, cough drops, etc.
Love that basil picture.
Already take echinacea and tumeric supplements. Our sunlight is limited so growing a lot of herbs does not work out well.

I will have to follow that link and see what lavender does. We started a lot of it last year and it’s doing well. Also I ate a lot of dandelion salad growing up, always in the spring with the young leaves. My grandmother was well known for a poultice from a common weed, I am thinking pigweed?? No way to find out now.
