Is Old Music Killing New Music?
The Atlantic ^ | January 23, 2022 | Ted Gioia

Old songs now represent 70 percent of the U.S. music market, according to the latest numbers from MRC Data, a music-analytics firm. Those who make a living from new music—especially that endangered species known as the working musician—should look at these figures with fear and trembling. But the news gets worse: The new-music market is actually shrinking. All the growth in the market is coming from old songs.

The 200 most popular new tracks now regularly account for less than 5 percent of total streams. That rate was twice as high just three years ago. The mix of songs actually purchased by consumers is even more tilted toward older music. The current list of most-downloaded tracks on iTunes is filled with the names of bands from the previous century, such as Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Police.

Parochial.

Music from 20s 30s 40s 50s and 60s are great and have been popular.

Only the uneducated are not familiar with them.

The American song book goes back even further. And show tunes? Wow!

To think the world begins and ends with the tastes of the boomers?

As I said. Provincial.

There’s way too much choice these days and music has become a commodity instead of a highly prized possession like it was way back when. There might be some great new music coming out every day and it’s the equivalent of a tree falling in the woods.

That coupled with the fact that there’s a crap-ton of bad music coming out every day.

concur on that too. Most ‘new’ Christian music really mising the soul moving feeling and sounds of old spirtuals/gospel.

Speaking of symphonies here is Alice in Chains performing Led Zep’s Kashmir with the Symphony Guild (Seattle I think).

Old song so it doesn’t qualify as new.

You’re not alone.

With Apple Music + Sirius XM, I find most of my listening starts at the 70s & goes back to the 40s.

And, I'll stretch the time back to the 50's R&R..
Rock and Roll died in the 60s.
After that, it was just Rock (almost extinct now).

None of your songs are my favorites (well, maybe ELO), but I would listen to any of them in a minute before I listened to a bieber, gomez, eminem, any shake-your-tail, can’t even name anymore…..

Today’s music isn’t honest music. Maybe that’s the problem.

I have a few observations:

1. Almost all generations think the music from their teen and pre-teen years is the best music.

2. We may be talking about classic pop/rock music (say from mid 70's to mid 90's -- the Generation X era) is simply better. I say that because it's not just Generation X that knows all those songs and loves them, but their kids and now grandkids. I dare say the younger generation knows those songs way more than us generation X'ers knew songs from the 1960's and 1950's, etc.

3. Don't underestimate the effect of marketing to the generation that makes most money. The baby boomers are retiring now (less income, less spending). The generation X and younger generations are working, but of the generations still working, generation X is the one that's advanced in their careers (making the most money). So a lot of marketing is steered to that generation. That's why so many movies and commercials have 1980's rock n roll and such -- appealing to the generation with the most income. I think that keeps that era of music more prevalent (keeps that music in our heads for more years and the younger generation can't help but be exposed to it a lot).
