Weekly Garden Thread - January 15-21, 2022 [The Most Bang For Your Buck Edition]
January 15, 2022 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 01/15/2022 6:47:06 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Joseph Lofthouse has been making a video series about landrace gardening. I don’t know how much of this video will make it into the final series, but this was posted by someone whose garden he was visiting. She grew potatoes from true potato seeds, not from tubers. I’m impressed with her harvest!

Sorry I missed your Veg Pie! We ate all of the roasted ones as is; they’re so good!

Definitely on the weekly rotation now, until spring. :)

This looks bad, but we've been through worse. The worst part is that we have NO snow cover. So glad I got most everything mulched well. My roses will probably take some pruning from the rabbits, but they seemed to benefit from that, last season. ;)

I thought maybe since you inherited the thread from her you knew some contact info. These are sad times, when a Freeper just stops posting. They were asking about her in the Q thread too yesterday.

More Bang For Your Buck - Companion Planting!

What is Companion Planting?

Based on scientific research, we know that there are certain vegetable crops which make “good” companions when paired together. In many cases, there is a beneficial effect such as protection from pests. Larger vegetables may also be used to protect smaller plants and seedlings from harsh winds or as a climbing support, while sprawling crops such as squashes can be used to suppress weeds around tall crops like corn.

Also, many flowers make ideal companions for vegetables and fruit. Plant “simple” flowers such as calendula, marigold and poached egg plant (Limnanthes douglasii) to attract beneficial insects to your garden and control pests such as aphids.

Diana here: Lots of plans and ideas at the link. There is also a garden planning tool you can use to design your own space.

I found that basil seemed to deter tomato hornworms.

At least, the year I had so much trouble with them, there were very few on the plants that had basil planted next to them

I have a 16 x 4 raised bed full of garlic, and the other one is going to be dedicated to onions this year.

My asparagus bed is more like 20 x 6 and this will be its third year so am looking forward to starting to harvest a crop from it.

Pete and I are still waiting. :(

It’s been a good two weeks now; she was thinking a week in recovery mode, but things happen. :(

We probably should have a better network at FR to keep track of one another. Let’s think about that, shall we? We’ve lost a lot of great FReepers through the years.

My Asparagus bed is quite the mess. I am considering starting another dedicated bed for Asparagus this season, then moving the current plants from the old bed to the new at the right time. Then Beau can till up the old Asparagus bed and that can be dedicated to something else. It’s at the west end of the rows, where it should be, because those fronds get HUGE and would block out the sun to other beds.

I now have 1/2 of two different beds dedicated to Garlic, and Spring bulbs, then I can over-plant with annuals each year in 1/2 of each bed while the garlic grows into August.

This will also cut down my propensity for planting TOO MANY tomatoes, LOL!

A designated contact would be a good thing to develop, like if I bite the dust, I’d have hubby contact Diana. Sound good?

Works for me! Beau will be amazed at how many people he has to contact on-line if I go first.

Maybe I’ll turn that job over to my sister. She’s stolen most of my FB friends, anyway! ;)

Jerusalem artichokes can be invasive. So I grew them in a large plastic trash barrel. It was easy to harvest the artichokes, which I had plenty of. The supply lasted several months and they were very tasty as I grew them organically. I don’t have the space for such a set up here; the artichokes were used mainly as part of my salads and used for diabetic control.

I think it’s a good idea to share an outside email address with a FReeper friend.

I set up a gmail account specifically for off site emailing of FReepers, incase FR was down, or something. I did not want it connected with my regular account so as to try to protect my anonymity.

If there is someone you know and trust, you can share email addresses or even cell phone numbers if you really know them, and keep in touch that way. Or someone could if the FReeper becomes incapacitated. The FReeper can then leave instructions to a family member to contact said person and let them know what’s going on.

I agree. Too many good, old time FReepers have just dropped off the radar and nobody knows why.

I once tried digging up some asparagus to transplant it.

I hope you have a tractor with a backhoe.

I put my asparagus bed on the north side of the garden where it would not shade anything.

I did too.

I didn’t realize Farmer Dean had passed on.

That’s a loss.

I recognized too many names.

Is that just for any FReepers or for military FReepers?
