Despite rave reviews, Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story" has failed to gain traction with audiences at the box office...In its first three weeks in cinemas, the film has captured just $36.6 million in global ticket sales. Its production budget was around $100 million, not including marketing costs.

It’s too late. The TRUST is gone. It will have to wait for a year or two until it gets to DVD, etc.
Once that trust/brand is ruined, you cannot make nearly as much money off your investment.
TRUST/INTEGRITY over time is so powerful. And...when you lose it, it is VERY VERY difficult to get back.
Was not exactly mass market fare?
Borges - that is not serious.
The 1961 film was the highest grossing movie of the year.
It won 10 Academy Awards.
Natalie Wood was already an international movie star with previous films like Miracle on 34th Street, Rebel Without a Cause, The Searchers, Splendor in the Grass, and a hit TV show.
Director - Jerome Robbins. Music - Leonard Bernstein. Lyrics - Stephen Sondheim.
Upper East Side and The Hamptons. He’s still walking around... free.
I mean they even remade “The Longest Yard”.....Why?
In the 21st century I mean. The original film was made just a few years after the Broadway show had opened. It was made with a movie star as you stated. Today WSS is essentially art house stuff. This film had no movie stars, no “modernizing” of the music with “hip hop” touches. It was a piece of classical Hollywood filmmaking that was very reverent to the source while changing stuff that would not play today (the gang dialogue and slang that was cringe inducing five minutes after the 1961 film came out).
Sure he did
yeah, gee a kids movie at Christmas made money? Wow what a surprise.
Did you see it?
Christmas used to be a time for all sorts of movies to do well. People are off work and families go to the movies.
I suspect if they ever do a movie version of “Wicked” it will be huge. West Side Story was just too long ago.
But now you can watch movies from home.
“ I highly recommend..”
Um..no thanks.
I recommend it to people who like WSS to begin with...
Rave reviews=Liberal preaching
That’s certainly true. Like I said, WSS may as well be Eugene O’Neill to a 15 year old today.
Hollywood is out of ideas. Alien attackers and action heroes for the Chinese audience. Remakes and faggotry for the domestic audience. That’s Hollywood today.
Did they turn Maria into a man-hating fembot?
I have not seen it, but I heard one of the most well known song routines in the original movie was taken out due to people being made ‘uncomfortable’. “I Want To Be In America”.
I don’t know if that is true or not. If so, too bad. That was one of my favorite songs and wrap around comedy routines in the first film.
Leonard Bernstein captured that Latin-Lightning in a jar. He captured the basic speaking rhythms, idioms, youthful exuberance, social expectations and thought patterns one presumes were common back in those 1957 Barrios.
Everyone in America comes from humble beginings if you go back far enough, generationally speaking. It is nothing to be ashamed of.
There was one line that wasn’t even being used in recent Broadway revivals that they left out.
They did not.
