World’s loneliest house built into side of remote mountain range has been empty for 100 years

The world’s loneliest house, stuck on the side of a remote mountain range, had lain empty for 100 years — but its mystery remains.

Savvy Italian soldiers are said to have built the shelter as a place to rest while battling the Austro-Hungarians across the rugged terrain.

The site seems far too small to be much of a “resting place” for WWI Italian soldiers. It does not seem large enough to hold what seems to me to be as many folks as it likely took to build the place. Would so many build such a difficult site that a bare few could enjoy? I don’t think so.

I can see one WWI advantage the site had - possible strategic observations. But to achieve that advantage would require communicating the observations. Radio contact would of course been the best way to do that, but it’s a question whether the occupants had the means for that. Without radio contact, observers at the site would have to climb back out of the site and hike and travel to somewhere else to communicate their observations.

Therefore I question the WWI hypothesis.

Maybe it was built by some, a few, AWOL soldiers as a hiding place until hostilities were over. One or two at a time could sneak back and forth to family and friends, to refresh their supplies, and given their location likely remained undiscovered as long as the fighting went on.

If you really want a shudder, because of their mutual male baby preference for many years now, the demographic imbalance of too many males in both China and India now exceeds 50 million. Men with no hope of marriage or employment: a recipe for civil war or war.

In between the two countries is a high altitude mountainous desert of contested land. So imagine if you will a “purge of excess males mostly infantry and artillery conscription war”, like the Battles of the Isonzo, but between 10 and 100 times larger. Conventional armies remaining in the rear to stop any enemy breakthrough. No nukes, chem or lab bio.

Each soldier is issued one pound of rice and a gallon of water a day, a simple rifle and 100 rounds, uniform and boots and a blanket to sleep in sub-zero weather with.

No. Post number 50 to me offers possible evidence - cause - for possible AWOL soldiers needing to hide out. The battles were so devastating it is easy to see how soldiers could think surviving was not on their side, unless they could just avoid fighting without surrendering.

You can put the weekly recycling buckets right outside the front door!

Don't have to shlep 'em up & down the hill.

And a bit of country chicken coop aroma?

But the eggs and chicken are good eating.

All that blood and loss of life just so Italy could pick up some carrion scraps of empire when Germany/Austria-Hungary were defeated.

From the accounts I have read the "White War" has to have been one of the most miserable places ever for a dogface soldier to have to fight in.

Utterly incompetent Italian generalship just kept feeding men into that meat-grinder.

And the water is NOT METERED! It’s FREE!!!

There’s more!
Everything conforms to BOCA BASIC CODE 1910.
