I’ve been to Cancun and surrounding areas. Maybe mid 1980s. The word was that the Federales were instructed to defend the tourista dollars and keep things safe. Something must have changed.

“The resort-studded coast” is toast. Surfers do not go south of the border any more, since surfers know all the stories about getting marched into a cop car and placed in a jail while wearing wet suits. No permission given to dry off. Plus, wallets getting stolen, girlfriends harassed and polluted oceans.
