I’ve been to Cancun and surrounding areas. Maybe mid 1980s. The word was that the Federales were instructed to defend the tourista dollars and keep things safe. Something must have changed.
They don wan no steenkin’ tourista dollars, anymore.

The Mexican Marines are still pretty much the real deal. But every other Mexican organization is hopelessly corrupted by narco money.
And thanks to Biden, this might be coming to a town near you.
I think it was same when we were there in @2012..

I felt very safe there back then. Criminals knew that they would eventually be staying at a zero-star extended stay Greybar Hotel. Or just disappear.
A lot has changed since then. I love Isla Mujeres although it has turned from a modest fishing village island to a boutique island (since I was there 10 years ago). Thst tiny island has a police/swat training center and a naval base. It’s only 1.5 miles wide (at its widest) by 3 miles long. The marina was filled with seized yachts. I heard the cartels are on the island now. Back in the day - it was a fishing island. I loved it there. It ‘was’ authentic snd special. Now it’s been ruined by snobby people who want massages. Yea I’m a bit pissed about it.
