Was Medina Spirit named for Harold Medina? Probably not, but it would be nice if he were. Medina was the Federal judge who presided over the sensational 1949 trial of 11 Communist Party leaders charged advocating the violent overthrow of the US government (they were convicted).

Race horses tend to have a lot of health issues and are frequently medicated. Even routine workouts and training races can lead to major injuries or sudden death. A few years back, the HBO series Luck about gambling and horse racing was cancelled after several such incidents led to furious outcries from the animal welfare crowd. Although the producers were cleared of misconduct, HBO realized that more routine injuries and deaths of the race horses used in the series were inevitable. HBO was unwilling to accept the recurrent spurts of bad publicity.
