LOL, that was kind of my first flash of thought...:)
I have always viewed the heated competition between Langley and the Wright Brothers as the epitome of an example of why private industry will always demolish government in a fair fight.
People working with their own money and time (as opposed to those who will get their money from the government to do something, no matter the fashion it is to be wasted) will always achieve a better, more efficient outcome.
I admire the Wright Brothers greatly.

Indeed. that is a classic example of a well-funded government bureaucracy being bested by a couple of bike mechanics.

I just found a site that said it was NOT taught in schools. I’m 77...I can attest to that.
To: Sacajaweau
The fact that the Wright Brothers had a bike shop in Ohio used to be common knowledge and the story of their first flights at Kitty Hawk were taught in the lower grades at public schools.

They had a bike shop, I knew they were bicycle mechanics, I knew that bicycle mechanics develop the first functioning aircraft, at least that’s what we think. I also know that the Wright brothers lived in Kitty Hawk during very windy times of year and I’ve seen their shacks and their tar paper siding and everything down there at the Wright brothers National Park and I got to tell you... With the wind blowing like it does and all the sand dunes around there the Wright brothers ate Sandy food the whole time they were in Kitty Hawk.

The Wright Cycle Shop building was actually the sixth and last of a series of rented structures out of which Wilbur and Orville ran their bicycle business. They knew how to move alright.

What stupidity.
I have seen the depth if design and pure engineering the Wright Brothers developed from nothing to create a machine that flew.
The individual you noted screwed around but created nothing of lasting value

It’s where they designed and built the first SR-71

But he flew, under power, 20 months BEFORE the Wright Brothers.

Not really. What you claim may very well be true but is irrelevant because he was not able to follow through

I’m a tad bit younger and I was taught about the Wright brothers and their bicycle shop. My teachers used it as a “see what the little man can do” lesson.

Everyone knows the Wright brothers only invented the airplane so that cities can put airports in black communities to separate them from white neighborhoods.
That's called "infrastructure," white supremacy style.
