A large number of the ICU Nurses at my place were ‘Floaters’ and they would routinely work between the SICU, MICU, and CCU. In my Department we worked just about everywhere as we were Masters of the Ventilators which are used in all areas.

It was rare to see an ICU Nurse work in the ERs or Trauma Rooms. Occasionally Nurses would transfer to the ORs.

The NICU & PICU Nurses tend to be very territorial, and I never saw much moving around to and from those Units. Most ICU Nurses are highly trained and moving around did not seem to me to be a huge training issue.
