A distraught Alec Baldwin repeatedly asked why was he given a “hot gun” after his prop weapon accidentally discharged on his New Mexico film set Thursday, killing a cinematographer and injuring the director, witnesses have claimed.
The tragic accident unfolded while Baldwin was filming his upcoming western film “Rust” at Bonanza Creek Ranch in Sante Fe.
Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, died and director, Joel Souza, 48, was injured after they were both struck when the gun discharged, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said.
Immediately after the incident, an eyewitness told Hollywood gossip site Showbiz 411 that Baldwin started asking how he could have been given a “hot gun” – meaning a firearm loaded with real ammunition.
“In all my years, I’ve never been handed a hot gun,” the actor allegedly kept saying.

An untrained prop person probably loaded the gun with live rounds.
In the photo with him on his phone he is seen with a face mask in his hand.
He is not wearing and is spreading the deadly chinese virus.
He is killing more people!!

“When I’m doing a training session with a performer, my main guideline, the heartbeat of the conversation, is to make sure that they are treating any weapon — whether it’s a bladed weapon or a firearm — as if it could potentially kill somebody. And those are usually the words I use,” said UCLA’s Williams. “It’s a serious situation and everyone’s got to be on their game.”
Hollywood adheres to Safety Bulletins, written and distributed by the Industry-Wide Labor-Management Safety Committee, for standards on weapon and prop safety, as well as other rules.
In the first bulletin addressing firearms and the use of blank ammunition, the document notes prominently: “TREAT ALL FIREARMS AS THOUGH THEY ARE LOADED.” It goes on to say live ammunition is to never be used nor brought onto a set.
Read how Brandon Lee died by a prop gun accident (remnant cartridge piece in barrel). It could have happened that way or something similar.
There’s another possibility. Think of the Twilight Zone movie where Vic Morrow and two kids were killed because John Landis drove the helicopter crew too hard and they crashed when the bird flew too low. This production may have been lax and cut corners. Hired an inexperienced or known screwup as armorer to save money. Or didn’t follow all safety procedures.
I despise Alec Baldwin, but actors are not qualified to be firearm prop masters on the sets where they are filming. That is supposed to be under the control of a specially trained person who is responsible to ensure that the gun is properly set for the intended use.
I don’t buy that. Its a toddlers attitude with a gun abusing it and thinking its a toy. Hollywood is the #1 abuser of guns and then blames society on gun abuse. You can never ever assume any gun is not loaded, and you only point to kill. Remember this idiot is playing to the camera. The camera cant see what you are pointing to. Baldwin pointed at both people and pulled the trigger. Its on him.
Add Tom Selleck. The press roasted him for yelling at an extra that was pointing a prop gun at people and playing around. He was also a board member of the NRA and an avid gun collector.
Exclusive Eyewitness Recounts Shooting on Alec Baldwin Movie Set: One bullet ripped through both victims"An eyewitness on set tells this column that the bullet went straight through the body of DP Halyna Hutchins and into the clavicle of the film’s director Joel Souza."
Yeah he should have never been put in that position. Still no details on what happened, but we know Hollywood loves those gun closeups. That’s when a lot of these bad things happen.
Still, NEVER point at something you don’t intend to damage.
Yes, he ultimately bears some level of responsibility. What that is remains to be seen as the facts unfold. Even though there are layers of safety protocols on movie sets and you trust at some level others are doing the safety job they’re paid big bucks to do, you’re ultimately the guy handling the (potentially deadly) prop and you should have the awareness at least to do your own safety check.
One would think. And the Director, who is in critical condition, wrote the script.
I forgot about Selleck.
That's true, and in reality re-enactors like this group actually don't point the gun at their victim - they point it slightly away, but from the audience POV it looks like they're pointing correctly.
Correct !
How can you forget Tom Selleck?! LOL
Typical Liberal, it’s always somebody else’s fault.
I agree on all counts. This bloated, arrogant has-been is blaming everyone but himself. Typical behavior for a malignant narcissist.
It was a cinematographer, not a cameraman. More details to come, maybe. Still, it’s basic, you never point a firearm at someone unless you intend to shoot them.
Who writes and checks headlines these days? Anyone? Baldwin was obviously given the gun before the shooting, and asked about it after.
