Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed in an incident involving a prop gun on the set of “Rust,” an Alec Baldwin film that was shooting in New Mexico on Thursday.
A second person was injured, and was receiving emergency care at a hospital in Santa Fe.
Hutchins’ death was confirmed by the International Cinematographers Guild, Local 600.
“We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called ‘Rust’ in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set,” said John Lindley, the president of the guild, and Rebecca Rhine, the executive director, in a statement. “The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family.”
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office said it was investigating the incident, which was reported at 1:50 p.m. Mountain Time at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, a popular filming location south of Santa Fe.
“The Santa Fe County sheriff’s office confirms that two individuals were shot during filming of a scene on the set of the movie western ‘Rust’,” the office said in a statement. “According to investigators it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged. Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.”

Alec Baldwin as Trump Tackles Gun Control on SNL
https://time.com/5184477/alec-baldwin-donald-trump-gun-control-snl/
You are worthless, Alec Baldwin.
Wonder if this will be a case of a double shooting fatality on stage with many people and recording equipment all over the place, nothing recording...
Isn’t Alec the jerk brother (who called his daughter all kinds of nasty things on the phone)?
Ever heard of Brandon Lee?
"how do you wound the second person?"
Ted Kennedy’s Oldsmobile and Alec Baldwin’s prop gun have killed more people than any of my guns.
He's a famous actor.
“Alec Baldwin. Karma.”
“The Trump Curse”
Add Alec Baldwin to this list....
He's also a Trump hater and foaming anti-gun nut.
Feel the schadenfreud...
Well, we can hope that it gnaws at Alec’s guts got the rest of his miserable life.
"foaming anti-gun nut"
Good question. “Why he was pointing it at a cinematographer?” Probably because he is a fool lacking experience with weapons.
Misfire because the gun did what it was told, and it’s the gun’s fault./ sarcasm, but just wait for the story to spin that guns are dangerous and do bad things.
Remember when Dick Cheney shot someone while hunting and Alec Baldwin poked fun on SNL.
I hope we get some follow up. Even blanks can be dangerous. But the media calls this a “misfire” yet it doesn’t sound like a misfire. Two people shot at least one woman dead. That’s not a misfire. Someone screwed up big time.
It wasn’t even the actors who were shot during shooting of a scene. It was someone behind the camera who is dead. A lot of things don’t add up here. Maybe a mistake. Maybe horsing around.
Nobody taught these people that all guns are loaded all the time. I support creative arts, and this is commercial creative arts. But something doesn’t add up. If I was in charge of making a film, the guns used wouldn’t even be chambered for any type of “normal” round. I would use a custom blank that only fit custom guns for movies. I wouldn’t use regular .45 or 9mm chambers. Almost nobody watching would know the difference. And with CGI for a lot of “art” (which is really just commerce, not art) a live-fire weapon isn’t even necessary.
p
The film, Rust is about a father whose 13 year old son accidentally kills a man,,,you can’t make this up
“Remember when Dick Cheney shot someone while hunting and Alec Baldwin poked fun on SNL.”
I haven’t watched SNL for years.
I was just going Alec Baldwin’s twitter account, which I had no reason to do before. What a hateful man. The TDS is still very strong.
