As they reissue their 1981 festive EP Yuletide Throwdown, we rate the best of the New York band who strutted through punk, disco and pop with absolute cool
5. Hanging on the Telephone (1978) Sometimes, a song takes a while to find its ideal singer. The original of Hanging on the Telephone, a 1976 single by LA powerpop band the Nerves, is pretty good, but Harry’s commanding performance owns the song, while Blondie’s arrangement is louder, brasher, tighter and tougher: the stuff of which classics are made.

yup, great flic...
- Got any porno? - You serious?
Yeah. Gets me in the mood.
- What’s this? Videodrome? - Torture. Murder.
- Sounds great. - It ain’t exactly sex.
Says who?
Clem Burke is a great drummer.
Blondie would never had “Made It” without Burke and his machine gun drum.
"Maria" is good. I'd pick "Die Young, Stay Pretty".
Nice sound - I like that.
Saw Blondie (well, Debbie Harry) in a small hotel in Cambridge, Mass., apparently building up for her 1999 comeback. Kicked ass. Aged, heavy, but still had a TON of presence. She HATED “The Tide is High.” Sang it double-speed and really jokey. I can see why; it’s not “her.” Excellent performance on everything else though.
Great video! I had a few of their albums back then.
Billy Zoom had that unique haunting guitar sound that made X a memorable band,
I can hear his riffs in my mind 40 years later as I write this.
Tiberius is 90
Yeah, some folks keep referring to Blondie as ‘she’. Blondie was the name of the band, Deborah Harry was the lead singer.
Thanks! I didn’t know.
“Never saw the physical appeal.”
Time for your annual trip to Pearl Vision!
I find myself doing that as well. I love it. Finding songs that become new favorites. There are some songs you stop and wonder why they didn’t make it to the charts.
I love so many performers who have real talent. Eric Carmen is a favorite singer/songwriter. Neil Diamond had some real gems because he was a prolific song writer.
I write lyrics…or did for years since I was a kid. There is no feeling like being 15 and getting on the school bus and everyone is singing the song you wrote last week.
I appreciate just about every genre. Have a really hard time with rap.
😊
Yep, me too!
Loved the 80s...
To each their own!! If we all liked the same gal Saturday night would be a fight night.

“It was better before they voted for What’s-His-Name
This must be the new world”
This came out in ‘77, but I think it defines the ‘80s—Sex Pistols
I’m still amazed at how much piss and venom they could load into this song, and it was about the New York Dolls.
