On Monday night, Jon Gruden informed the team that he will resign as the team’s head coach after a New York Times piece was written in regards to emails he sent back in 2011.
The piece showed a number of concerning emails with vulgar criticism directed at Roger Goddell, President Barack Obama and more. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Raiders received word of these emails on Friday but did not take action over the weekend.
Instead, Gruden coached on Sunday against the Bears in what was his final game as the coach for the Raiders. The news was first reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero via his Twitter account.

I don’t know for sure but like I said, they are generally guaranteed arrangements, just like the players have.
For instance, when coaches move to another team before a contract is up, the old teams pays the previous contract and the new team pays the new contract.
Yes, most players are on non-guaranteed contracts, at least after a certain point. But, all coaches do have guaranteed contracts.
No one in their right mind was going to walk away from the contract he had and not be handsomely paid off.
And, the emails were written when he was working for ESPN. So, the Raiders nor the league had a right to terminate or suspend him based on the emails.
The Raiders are the poorest team in the league. If Mark Davis wants to retain the team, he can't afford to be paying 10s of millions to absent coaches.
Gruden has a valid contract. The Raiders either have to pay him all the remaining money on the contract or they have to negotiate a settlement with him.
The league nor team have ANY right to terminate his contract based on the emails in question because he was not employed by the league at the time he wrote the emails.
Gruden is going to get a huge amount of money. To the extent, he settles for less than the entire amount will ONLY be because it would open more employment opportunities for him to be freed from his contract.
No. Coaching contracts are guaranteed BUT they generally have a waiver if you get another coaching gig at the same level. But also guarantees are only for if you get fired. If you quit that’s opting out. NFL player contracts aren’t default guaranteed. Players are getting smarter about the amount of cash that’s in a guarantee realizing that back ended “ego” contracts that you’re going to be cut before you see any of that money are worthless. Gruden might be getting some sort of payoff, but he ain’t getting 10 mil for the next six years of sitting at home.
He has a contract to coach. If he voluntarily doesn’t coach then why do they owe him money? Hes not fulfilling his part of the contract.

I dont think that’s completely correct. I know for a fact several coaches who have moved teams are getting paid by previous team and current team.
Agreed. His reputation has been ruined and likely he won’t ever be an announcer again. It had to be the Commissioner’s office (Goodell). He did say some bad things about him and he got upset I guess.
Nope, didn’t say that. Quitting generally nulls the contracts. But when a contract is guaranteed firing them means you still need to pay them.
A lot of it depends on the league and the specifics of their CBA. I know NHL contracts better and I know they have a clause that ends payoff if you get an “equivalent” job. So another NHL head coaching gig. Which I think leads to a lot of coaches taking TV gigs for a year or 2 after getting fired. Until their contract runs out. Hey if you can get paid head coach money without doing head coach work... NFL coaching CBA I haven’t learned that much about. I know it’s guaranteed contracts, but I don’t know if there are out clauses. Given that there’s about 100 people vying for 32 head coaching jobs I have a hard time thinking the NFL would put themselves into a position to have to double pay coaches. But who knows.
