A shocking new poll from the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia reveals that over half of Trump voters surveyed, and 41% of Biden voters, are in favor of blue and/or red states seceding from the union. Yeah, it’s gotten that bad.
The idea that the nation’s political divide has become so toxic that we should prepare from some sort of “national divorce” has largely been left to clever thought experiments best left for dinner parties and ironically detached columns. However, we’ve now arrived at a point where more than half of Trump voters “somewhat agree” that the time for secession is nigh.
From the Center for Politics report:
Significant numbers of both Trump and Biden voters show a willingness to consider violating democratic tendencies and norms if needed to serve their priorities. Roughly 2 in 10 Trump and Biden voters strongly agree it would be better if a “President could take needed actions without being constrained by Congress or courts,” and roughly 4 in 10 (41%) of Biden and half (52%) of Trump voters at least somewhat agree that it’s time to split the country, favoring blue/red states seceding from the union.
The report continues by examining the broad political dissolution felt by members of both parties (emphasis mine.):
— On one hand, roughly 80% of Trump and Biden voters view democracy as preferable to any non-democratic kind of government.
— On the other hand, more than 6 in 10 Trump and Biden voters see America as less a representative democracy and more a system that is run by and rigged for the benefit of the wealthy.
— Overall, more than two-thirds support — and one-third strongly — emboldening and empowering strong leaders and taking the law into their own hands when it comes to dealing with people or groups they view as dangerous.
— And their willingness to consider violating democratic tendencies and norms extends beyond the hypothetical and to a dangerous and alarming finding: Roughly 2 in 10 Trump and Biden voters — or more than 31 million Americans — strongly agree it would be better if a “President could take needed actions without being constrained by Congress or courts” (as extrapolated from the results of this survey). Roughly 4 in 10 (41%) of Biden and half (52%) of Trump voters at least somewhat agree that it’s time to split the country, favoring blue/red states seceding from the union.
A shocking YouGov poll in June found that 66% of Republicans in southern states want to secede from the United States. That survey, which was done in conjunction with BrightLineWatch, looked at the current political climate in America. The most stunning question concerned support or opposition for the state in which respondents lived in “seceding from the United States to join a new union with [list of states in new union]?”
President Joe Biden largely ran on a platform of reunification, and despite an effective six first months of largely positive approval ratings, recent missteps in Afghanistan, and a resurgence of Covid infections, which is — ironically, largely due to a large percentage of Trump supporters refusal to get a vaccine — have led to his approval being underwater.
That’s where very thoughtful attention must be given to “education”
For sure. Utter nonsense.
That’s certainly how I feel, but I’d be in the wrong half. Can we secede county by county?
Lord I hope this happens.
I’d love to see a mass exodus of liberals from Georgia. Take all the Hollywood and tech people with them.
The two sides cannot coexist.
John Adams warned that the tyranny of the majority is the worse than that of a despot, which is why the Constitution has provisions protecting the rights of minorities and of the individual.
Oh wait, we can’t secede from the Union. That’s treason!
And so many people on here will shout that. Those days are OVER!!
Speaking of secession, see my tagline.
Why? $$$$
If the Red states were to secede, hopefully, and put in place some legit laws about illegals/refugees, guns, etc, they’d leave anyway. It wouldn’t be their cup of tea, so to speak.
Look at that company in Texas that will help employees move because of the abortion law just signed.
“Why do the red states need to secede? They believe in America. Instead of seceding, just banish the blue states from the union, Declare them as Mexico’s most northern province.”
I agree for the most part, but rather than lose an entire state such as california, only kick out the large metropolitan areas. They are the reason a state is “blue”.
Ok, intriguing and depressing as this is, I still don’t really know the parameters of the subjects.
A decent number of self-IDed of each party were included, but beyond that I see nothing about their demographics. Are they all from Charlottesville? Students at the college? VA? Across the US? Different races and immigration background? So I’m not sure how representative this is.
While the Left continues he’s to tell themselves they’re smarter than everyone else, I think they’re missing one glaring point in this survey
Except for a few states, mostly in the mid Atlantic and Northeast, the majority of the country is RED. What makes NY a Blue state? The dense populations in a few cities. Same goes for California, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, Oregon.
I doubt anyone can name me 2 or 3 states that are overwhelmingly dominated by Liberal/Democrats.
So, break it up by Red and Blue. What happens when most of Pennsylvania wants in with the Red Country. What happens when most of western NY and Long Island wants in on the Red Country. What happens when all of Central and Eastern Washington/Oregon want in.
Hell, what happens when all of Northern, Eastern and Southern Cali want in in the Red Country?
If I’m not mistaken there’s a movement right now where damn near all of Oregon wants to secede and join Idaho.
It would get very lonely very fast for the folks in the Blue States.
Plus the Red States have most of the food, oil, gas and guns. And they’d still have deep water ports.
You have a problem with “i”, don’t you?
Texas could and should secede.
With Abbott as a leader? Bwaaaaa! He is part of the problem. A feckless cuck thats about to be runover by another 400,000 Hattians, Florida needs to load out DeSantis for about 6 months to Texas.
No, the geography/geometry has to be contiguous.
I think we should split it between East and West. Repubs and true Americans get East because…please bear with me…East is the true heart of the nation, where it was born. We are CONSERVATIVES and will cherish our history which is there. Commie Lib traitors would tear it down and burn it and replace with all their idols.
Furthermore, the East is more self-sustaining. Let libs figure out how to keep their desert lands going. Almost like their beloved Moslems do. And let them cherish their “Indian” and Mexican roots more which are still there. since they hate the whites who created the US so much.
President Joe Biden largely ran on a platform of reunification, and despite an effective six first months of largely positive approval ratings, recent missteps in Afghanistan, and a resurgence of Covid infections, which is — ironically, largely due to a large percentage of Trump supporters refusal to get a vaccine — have led to his approval being underwater
In other real news Elvis was spotted at kfc last night
Agreed. Every time these damn fools yell down with the Electoral College, I show them MD. If we had electoral system in MD, Western MD and Eastern Shore wouldn’t constantly be threatening to secede. Which I don’t blame them.
I have nothing against ‘i’s’, what I do have a problem with is a tiny little keyboard and large fingers. I also suffer a neurological issue where I spell words backwards, and I don’t always catch the words I’ve misspelled, but over the years I’ve learned not to obsess over it when writing in casual forums. Back in the formal confines of school and work, It was more important to dot every I and cross every t, but in an informal social setting such as forums, yeah, not so much. Sorry if it bothers you.
