David Lee Roth: ‘I’m throwing in the shoes. I’m retiring’
Las Vegas Review-Journal ^ | October 1, 2021 | John Katsilometes

Posted on 10/02/2021 2:00:52 AM PDT by Texan4Life

“I’ve got a band that is doing what Al and I used to call a ‘block,’ that means 75 rehearsals for one show,” Roth said. “We are bringing it in classic VH style. Alex and I are the only version, that was his message. There is no other variation. There is no torch being passed. There is no other side to this coin. This is classic, in-your-face Van Halen.”

“I’ve given you all I’ve got to give. It’s been an amazing, great run, no regrets, nothing to say about anybody. I’ll miss you all. Stay frosty.”

I blame BOC for my hearing loss.

3rd row just about dead center.

Secret Treaties tour IIRC.

Boy howdy, girl — you ain’t kidding!! He was something back in his day. What I loved about him (and this is coming from a girl who spanned musical styles from punk/new wave to metal) was that he was unabashedly a Rock Star. He loved being the big personality front man.

Such a refreshing change from the nimrods who came along later in the grunge/indie scene with their, “we’re artists, not stars” bs. He was a show man.

And yet we all get old...

David Lee Roth today.

Not schadenfreude, but I remember the 70s and 80s, I'm about the same age as him. I remember what I call my "studly" days, but nowadays? Just nope.

I sat on Buck’s Marshall stack in a WV roadhouse in 1993, taking photos the whole set.

I would do it all over again.

/TYPE LOUDER!!!

;D

First time I saw them was the Fire of Unknown Origin tour in ‘81.
They still had some lasers, the huge Godzilla and when they played Veteran Of The Psychic Wars, they brought an album cover-costumed “Oyster Boy” out in chains and he played the kettle drums.

Eric was still driving his Low Rider onstage for the encore and Born To Wild.

It. Was. Awesome.

I’ve stood right against the stage at several county fairs and cheerfully had my teeth rattled.

I regret nothing.

:D

Couldn’t find any live vids from that Largo MD/Cap Center show.

Very well remember blasting their 8-track version of, ‘Girl you really got me’.

Roth had one of those voices you just couldn’t connect to any face until you saw him. I saw them live after only two albums out at a 2000 seat venue in Boston from the front row, balcony probably a hundred feet from the stage. What a show.

A reference to the last Van Halen studio album, there’s a song on it called Stay Frosty.

Not hardly.

They’re back to playing arenas in the US and Europe, and play at Sturgis every year.

Tickets are insanely high *if* you can score any.

It would cost me over $300 just for “general admission/stand wherever you can”.

So yeah, my days of standing front of the stage at county fairs is over.

I blame Van Halen for mine. We sat right in front of the speakers as well.

Buck [Donald] does not get the recognition for his insane guitar prowess that he so rightly deserves.
All of that coming out of him and he is still as cool as ice.

They are *still* not in the HOF.

The solo in Then Came Last Days Of May and Astronomy are just as wild.

I never understood how he stayed in such great shape. When he was with VH he drank Jack like water and smoked like a broke stove.

Not a great singer but a fantastic showman. His “California Girls” video remains one of the greatest ever.

You are so right. I’m not in bad shape, but I look at my rock and roll days and go, “Wow, you wasted a lot of that!”

Just damn. I was 15 when I went to my first concert in Hampton Roads VA, and it was the Van Halen 2 tour. It spoiled me; no band has surpassed Van Halen as far as live shows when in their prime. Only Iron Maiden came close.

Pure sonic and visual assault, created by Eddie's playing and DLR's showmanship, respectively. The sword stuff and martial arts routine in the dark backlit by a suddenly appearing color changing light when the drums started pounding for "Everybody Wants Some" during the Women and Children First tour was a classic example of DLR's performing prowess; I wouldn't be surprised if he knew how cool the weed smoke would look in the light and shadow of his silhouette. Being a garage band vocalist myself, I can assure you that he was the standard for frontman as far as I and my peers were concerned. We all wanted to be him; dress like him, sound like him, move like him. He has achieved rock immortality, so suck it haters! His growling vocals and signature scream made him instantly recognizable in any song he did.
