Samuel Adams' new beer is illegal in 28 states. Here's why.

Samuel Adams just created a new beer that’s so strong, it’s illegal — in 28 states, at least.

The brand just released its 12th batch of Utopias beer, according to a press release from the company. Utopias, which is barrel-aged and released every two years, is described by the company as “a spirited blend of multiple batches of our extreme beers.” This particular batch was finished with 2,000 pounds of cherries and offers “subtle notes of honeyed apricot and caramel to the rich layers of flavor.”

The reason it’s illegal in 28 states, however, has to do with its alcohol by volume (ABV), which stands at 28%.

For those who want to get their hands on a bottle (legally, of course) you’ll have to pay a bit more than your average six pack. A bottle of the latest batch of Utopias retails for a suggested price of $240.

# Just take a Sam Adams and add grain alcohol. Same thing.

Not really. This kind of thing has a very unique taste. Not really my thing, but a small glass of it is decent. Couldn’t drink a bottle of it.

# Real beer doesn’t have fruit in it.

Preach it brother!

The SA Oktoberfest is one of the best out there that I have tried this year. Didn’t really care as much for last years. I did a side-by side ‘flite’ test (4oz pour) of 4 different ones at my local bar, and liked the Rahr & Sons best, but the SA was so close that it was really pretty much a toss up between the two.

Sometimes I really think FR needs a ‘like’ button.

I am on an Octoberfest mission this year for some reason. Every time I see one I haven’t tried, I’m trying it. Brooklyn Brewery’s Octoberfest is also really good; I tried it side by side with Sierra Nevada’s. Both were good, but Brooklyn won that by a slight margin. I had never tried anything of theirs before. Good stuff.

That’s why I like the idea of doing a flite of different beer. You get enough to really give you a feel for the taste, without getting intoxicated. I like beer, but don’t really dig being drunk, since I normally ride to the bar. Flites are more expensive because it’s more work for the barkeep to pour 4 small glasses than one, and they don’t want to overencourage such things.

Flites are great. I call it the “I can’t decide platter.” It’s a nice way to try several things without really filling up. I’d like to see more places offer it.

Local store is supposed to get a couple more Octoberfest brews on tap this week. They allow tasting. Looking forward to more. I made my own this year, too, and it will be ready in about two weeks.

“Couldn’t drink a bottle of it.”

One ‘bottle’ is almost 7 ounces of alcohol.

I’ll let you know. I’m using all of my willpower to not get into it too early. The Mr. Beer system is very easy to use, and they have a few Octoberfest recipes.

"The SA Oktoberfest is one of the best out there that I have tried this year."

Yes, extremely good marzen with full head and not too sweet and not spiced like prior years. Comparable to when Sierra Nevada did their own Okts in-house before they started pairing with brewers (which has been wildly hit-or-miss). One wonders if maybe SN's original recipe made its way into SA's hands...

Several companies offer yeasts that continue fermenting above the 14% level but don’t know if they are natural or genetically modified. As a general rule, Saccharomyces cerevisiae stops fermenting above that level. Ninja yeasts have black hoods and throw poison laced projectiles.

“Saccharomyces cerevisiae”

Generic Baker’s yeast. Genetic nodded versions now used.

exactly. I loved some of their seasonal beers but once they went into full hate-mode, I cancelled them. Same with Gillette.

Ninja yeast is yeast that will only battle the movie’s hero one at a time.
