I lived in New Zealand for 2 years from 1982 to 1984 and one of the very interesting and fascinating aspects of the country was that it was (and still is) home to many rare flightless bird species. Almost like visiting a museum where many priceless, rare works of art were stored but sadly some were destroyed and others seriously damaged.

This process began even when the Maori first arrived (the moa and Haast’s Eagles soon died out due to overhunting). I even recall a story in which the Takahe (a large turkey sized rail) was seriously threatened a good bit because a European nobleman brought chamois deer over for hunting purposes and the deer ate up the indigenous grass plants that those birds had for a food supply. Not to mention dogs and cats which preyed upon the flightless birds as well.

It needn't be a little penguin. It can be the biggest penguin you've ever seen. An electric penguin, twenty feet high, with long green tentacles that sting people, and you can stab it in the wings and the blood can go spurting psssssshhhh in slow motion.
