We interrupt your daily “Invisible Touch” listen to share some upsetting news about Phil Collins, who revealed in a new interview that he’s no longer able to play the drums due to deteriorating health. Speaking with BBC Breakfast alongside his Genesis bandmates, Collins confirmed that he won’t be behind the kit for the band’s upcoming The Last Domino? world tour, and that his son, Nic, will be drumming in his place. (Meanwhile, his daughter, Lily, is famously in Paris.) “I’d love to, but you know, I mean, I can barely hold a stick with this hand. So there are certain physical things that get in the way,” Collins explained about his current state. “I’m kind of physically challenged a bit, which is very frustrating because I’d love to be playing up there with my son.” Collins also expressed skepticism that he’ll ever tour again after The Last Domino? concludes its run in December. “We’re all men of our age, and I think to some extent, I think it probably is putting it to bed,” he said. “I think just generally for me, I don’t know if I want to go out on the road anymore.”
Collins has been plagued with serious health issues over the past few years. In 2016, he revealed that he was living with dislocated vertebrae, nerve damage, and foot fractures, which left him feeling like he was walking “on sticks” and impeded his ability to perform. For The Last Domino? tour, Collins will solely be taking on vocal duties for Genesis’s catalogue of hits
I'm heading off to Eric's concert in about 30 minutes. He's only playing venues with no mask mandates. Starts tonight at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.
I had the great opportunity to view the items he lent to the Alamo Museum this summer. Awesome!
Yep, the routine he did with the tambourine during "I Know What I Like" was a staple of many Genesis tours.
“Phil was a very good drummer. Used to lay down some great percussion on a lot of old Genesis tunes that had some rather unusual time signatures.”
Amen! See Post #100. I love the guy. :)
Do you have an opinion on Steve Hackett? He contributed a LOT to Genesis, as well. Under-rated guitarist, for sure! I could listen to ‘Please Don’t Touch’ (album) every day for the rest of my life and never tire of it. :)
There is one singer who still sounds as good as ever, and that’s Paul Rodgers.
Drum playing at steady pace for a full concert is heavy exercise.
You should listen to Steve’s “Voyage of the Acolyte” album, Phil and Mike Rutherford play on it.
You might want to also check out Anthony Phillips, he was their guitarist before Steve Hackett, he was on the ‘Trespass’ album, which is a great album even without Phil and Steve.
I gotta agree with you on that. The man has taken care of himself and his voice. He is impressive.
“You should listen to Steve’s ‘Voyage of the Acolyte’ album...”
I know that one, too. I will listen to your other suggestions. Thanks!
I love FR Music and Movie threads. I always learn something. :)
“But can he dance?”
Lol, one of the best performances I have ever seen was when he introduced that song live at the Billboard music awards in 1992.

Since this thread about Collins mentions McCartney, I thought this article about Phil's grudge against McCartney might interest some:

LOL! Yep. Or “In the air tonight”. I cant stand that freakin’ song, it’s a BEER COMMERCIAL.

And Phil didn’t have kind words about Led Zeppelin in regards to the Live Aid gig.

LOL, they did that because Phil’s Tarzan soundtrack beat them out for “Blame Canada”.
Aw man, hang in there brother/sister! I’m glad you kicked the habit and sad to hear there’s lingering damage with COPD.
I’m about 20 years younger than you and I wonder if I’m going to be in a similar situation 20 years from now. I used to be a half-way decent rhythm guitarist, love playing bass and had five years of classical piano training. I go back and forth on instruments depending on my interests. I’ve recently taking up drumming. It’s ironic starting it mid-life, since that will most likely be the first instrument that will have to go. The thought of being a gigging drummer sounds daunting having to haul them to gigs, etc.
I gave up my monster bass amps years ago and I’m thankful for modern designs. I hated lugging my Eden Metro 2x10 years that I think weighed close to 100 pounds. Now my 2x10 Fender Rumble is 39 pounds. My primary bass guitars are 7.8 and 8.6 pounds. Never liked heavy equipment even when I was half my age.
I haven’t gigged in years but I’m thinking about getting back into the game if this covid garbage ever dies down.
I still want to buy more and more but I try to control it. I actually try to convince myself to stop playing at times. HAHA.
Hang in there!
Abacab
Yep, and Page later blamed LZ's horrible performance on Collins, even thought it was obvious that Page was absolutely blotto and could barely play at the time.
Jimmy was still on the smack big-time then.
I like Steve Hackett a lot. Genesis really missed him when he left, but I guess he and Tony Banks butted heads.
