Man dies in Des Moines hospital after staff can't find ICU room in Nebraska ('We called 23 different hospitals')

DES MOINES, Iowa (KETV) — Mark McConnaughey was a guy you could count on for anything, according to his long-time friend and doctor Mike Zaruba.

"If someone was in need, he would drop whatever he was doing, even if he needed to get what he was doing done, and come help," Zaruba said.

KETV reports two weeks ago, when the 57-year-old needed care beyond what the Nemaha County Hospital could provide, Zaruba, a board-certified ER doctor, said they could not find any help available in Nebraska.

"That triggered an inflammatory response through his body that cause multi-organ failure," Zaruba said.

McConnaughey was never tested for COVID-19 but showed many of the signs for COVID according to Zaruba. He said McConnaughey was fully vaccinated.

He said McConnaughey had a severe shoulder injury that got worse. Zaruba believes McConnaughey may have also had an asymptomatic COVID-19 infection that played a role. "That triggered an inflammatory response through his body that cause multi-organ failure," Zaruba said.

I have a friend whose prostate cancer caused an inflammatory response with multi-organ failure, years before covid was a thing. Doctors need to keep their mouths shut in the absence of firm clinical findings.

Nemaha is rural SE Nebraska. The question could be asked what type of insurance did he have if any? Might be why no takers.

To my non medically trained way of thinking it sounds like he died of sepsis resulting from an internal injury that got infected.

I think there is some Federal incentive to the hospital if they report a Covid case/death, even if vaccinated?? If so I would think it would think finding another hospital would be no problem. (He might have also died being transported.)

The article reads he was fully vaccinated. That is probably why he was not tested.

Could it be a combination of the immune response to the shoulder injury and the vaccine’s immune response that caused the inflammmatory response? I think that would be more likely than asymptomatic COVID19 infection. However didn’t the article also read that he had symptoms?

I came across this article on vaccine related shoulder injuries. Which makes me wonder if this is what happened to him.

https://www.ismp.org/resources/prevent-shoulder-injuries-during-covid-19-vaccinations

SIRVA is a shoulder injury triggered by the incorrect injection of a vaccine into the shoulder capsule (joint) rather than the deltoid muscle. It is caused by using an incorrect IM injection technique or improper landmarking of the IM injection site (the deltoid muscle) that results in the unintended injection of the vaccine (and/or trauma from the needle) into and around the underlying bursa of the shoulder. This results in an inflammatory process that causes injury to the musculoskeletal structures of the shoulder (e.g., tendons, ligaments, bursae)

It is B S... BUT its because many of the Nurses and CRN’s are being let go for not getting the clot shot. Some Doctors as well. I’ve been through a couple ER’s, ICU’s and cancer wards and have seen the majority of beds empty and hospital wings closed off because of the nursing shortage. And because a majority of them are unionized, they are limited to a specific number of patients they are allowed to care for per shift. Some areas are more restrictive than others. ie. ER has a nurse for every 3 patients except for trauma patients then it 1 to 1, ICU is usually 1 to 1, neonatal is another one with tighter restraints. Cancer wards, heart centers and general illness hospitalizations are 3-5 to 1. Its all a scam, 0bamalamadingdong’s 0care (socialized medicine & single payer attempt) really hit the medical industry hard. And it will only get WORSE

Amen.

Plenty of people die of infections that get out of hand. Some years back, the healthy, athletic, thirty-ish son-in-law of a local University’s basketball coach had a muscle strain in a leg. It was bothering him, and he did not feel well, but he insisted on being with the family on Christmas Eve, and sleeping over at Grandpa’s (the coach) with his family, retiring early. The next morning (Christmas morning) he woke up screaming in pain, the leg swollen and multi-colors. He was rushed to the hospital and died a few hours later. IMO, his father-in-law was never quite the same.

This sort of stuff can happen very fast... :-(

They didn’t just let him die. They flew him to Des Moines for more appropriate care than the local hospital could provide.

Actually, from the article:

In the days that followed, all Nebraska hospitals started limiting some non-emergency surgeries.

The state is also re-opening a hospital patient transfer center to help find available beds and to better manage hospital capacity.

"These cases have been wake-up calls to take more direct movement to take pressure off our hospitals," Zaruba said.

It sounds to me as if capacity "should have been there" but was mismanaged.

Interesting that last year, someone could get crushed by a locomotive and die, get their blood tested for some reason and if they popped positive for covid, it was documented a covid death.

Now, you die, they don’t want to know anything about covid or if the person was vaccinated. Of course, if the deceased, before dying, or the family mentions that they didn’t get the shot, that’s what makes the news.

That is the best explanation yet.

Well. Why don’t you contact the family and find out for yourself. There are more and more and more stories like this. Doctors, nurses, families etc. are all saying the same thing. Are you telling me they are all fake news? I certainly don’t think so.

This is the problem with this virus and it’s variants. It overloads the hospital system and their ICUs because we only have do many doctors and nurses.

And because a percentage of people refuse to get vaccinated, take other public health measures and take the seriousnees of the issue, it’s going to continue to happen.

Again another story about the lack of ICU beds. They IMPLY that it’s because the wards are filling up with COVID patients. But it NEVER says that. They have no beds because they are short of personnel. They are short of personnel because for the last year and half the government has been essentially paying people not to work. Also many medical organizations fired those who wouldn’t get vaccinated. Also there’s hardly anyone going into the medical field anymore out of college. All of these things are why there are no beds. COVID has little or nothing to do with it.

I don’t think so. There is only so many doctors and nurses who specialize in this. They are well paid but there are only so many of them.

Since the beginning, the public health measures are all about trying to prevent the overworking of these limited specialists.
