A Texas man who was shot six times is still waiting for surgery in a Houston hospital about a week after the shooting as the facility struggles due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Joel Valdez is waiting for surgery at Ben Taub Hospital in Houston, Texas and spoke to Fox 26 about the situation, advising people to do their best to keep healthy and not end up in the hospital right now.
Ben Taub Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is operating at 98 percent capacity, according to a spokesperson for the Harris Health System, while 33 percent of those patients have conditions related to COVID-19.
Valdez, who is a local business owner and father, spoke to Houston's Fox 26 from his hospital bed on Friday.
He was shot by a stranger last Saturday morning while leaving a Kroger on the 9100 block of the city's W. Sam Houston Parkway.
Police have arrested a suspect and charged him with shooting Valdez earlier this week.
"Having broken bones and bullets in me for over a week now, it's a little frustrating," Valdez said.
"I got shot in the neck right here, but I got hit three times in my left shoulder. That's what is broken and what I'm awaiting surgery for," he said.

Not sure if I’m buying this... 🤔
I don’t believe one word of this crap.
Due to the selfish ultra right wingers refusing to take the experimental government approved treatment..
Every Hospital across America is forced to only treat people who have been shot 7 or more times or more.
Unless you want an abortion than go to the front of the line
What color is the perp? That will answer your question.
Staffing!
I’m smelling BS here.
Pardon me but has anyone inquired as to Joel Valdez immigration status? Is he a Dreamer, a dream crusher or a straight up invader?
If I remember correctly, Ben Taub is the “charity” hospital. FWIW.
Given the lower mortality rate of the variant, are all of these hospitalizations necessary? Are hospitals being incentivized to inflate the number of hospitalizations?
Nice find, great point.
Well I’m sure it’d be nice to not have to use the 33 percent on covid patients. So easily preventable. People think they know it all. Lol.
Are there any local freepers who can confirm this story?
It’s another one of those stories that seems just to well
timed, it just fits so perfectly into the narratives
preferred by the marxist biden administration and their
many spokesjournalists in the media, thus it can be said
that this article bears at least some of the hallmarks of
propaganda.
after reading the headline, I thought it was just about typical week in Chicago
I think they're waiting for him to finish all his media interviews. :o)
Indeed the media pimping chaos again um still.
Hard to say. We have to deal in the current reality. It’s nice to fantasize what if’s but we really don’t have that luxury at this time.
It is a county government hospital, one of several facilities operated by the Harris County Hospital District (aka, “HarrisHealth”). Low-income residents not eligible for Medicaid (including illegal aliens) can get a “gold card” entitling them to essentially free care at the county facilities. They have another full-service hospital in northeast Houston, LBJ.
It certainly isn’t the only nonprofit hospital nearby, though. The Texas Medical Center is a massive collection of hospitals, the largest in the world. Several large, nonprofit, full service hospitals are literally within walking distance: Memorial Hermann, Methodist, and Baylor-St.Luke’s.
To be fair, TMC’s regular, “Phase I,” “non-pandemic configuration” ICU beds are at 100% capacity, but they have expanded those. They have postponed non-urgent surgeries, and I think that’s the point: This guy may have been shot server also times, but he is not awaiting emergency surgery. It is also unclear why he is an inpatient waiting in bed for non-emergency shoulder surgery. But, while Ben Taub is a perfectly good hospital by county hospital
standards, you get what you pay for, and that sometimes includes waiting for non-urgent surgery even in non-pandemic times.
