To simplify the process of what states are the best for retirees in 2021. The finance website Bankrate provides new data of the worst states to retire in this year.
Bankrate examined five essential factors: affordability, wellness, culture, weather, and crime for each state. Affordability and wellness were weighted the most, 40% and 20%, respectively.
The survey found that Maryland, Minnesota, and Kansas were the worst three states to retire in.
“It’s a complicated formula to figure out what’s going to attract people to your state and how to create the best climate for them,” Jeff Ostrowski, Bankrate analyst, told CNBC. “It’s a combination of factors, some in the control of the state and its leaders and some that are not.”
Ostrowski said Maryland ranked the worst because of complaints about the state’s tax burdens.
Here’s the full list of the eleven worst states to retire in this year:
11. Washington
9. TIE: Idaho
9. TIE: Connecticut
8. Alabama
6. TIE: Arkansas
6. TIE: Maine
5. Alaska
4. Montana
3. Kansas
2. Minnesota
1. Maryland
The timing of the Bankrate report comes as the number of retired Baby Boomers has surged post-pandemic, according to Pew Research Center analysis data from late 2020.
“We’re not expecting that someone’s going to make their life decision based on one index; it’s just another data point to consider,” Ostrowski said.

Another reason to stay away from Idaho. Please stay away.
Don’t come here.
Terrible place to live.
Stay in California.
I got Hagerstown, Maryland.
What does the so called “culture rank” even mean?
I’m diggin’ Arizona.
Excuse, but I must disagree about Alabama. There is certainly a lot of rural and urban poverty there. However, the Tuscaloosa, Huntsville, Auburn-Opeleika, and Baldwin County areas are very nice (because the government has dumped a pile of money into the first three).
However, most of the rest of the state is rather sad. The government has pretty much abandoned anything in the northwest and southern part of the state. No economic development there. (Why can’t they spend a little money to help the poor people develop industry???)
It just depends on where you are in Alabama, just as in any other state.
Ssshh. Don’t interrupt them. Plus, Idaho has giant spiders that’ll eat your pets, neonazis, skinheads and quicksand. Best to stay away.
You mean to the tropical paradises?
how did Hawaii avoid the list?
Though, utility costs can be low if you choose where to live carefully.
Hoping my new 2nd home in Arizona is not a bear with electriciy. Sure would like to move there permanently, but water, gas, and electric are not cheap.
This analysis is pure crap for ranking Idaho so low. If Idaho is so awful, why are people flocking here from all the liberal states?
Wellness = free healthcare
Culture = celebrated faggotry
Liberal refugees, don’t vote for what you fled.
They (Oro valley) are nailing us $45 month for water and we are not there using any. Having PV to cut electricity here in Hawaii has us spoiled and i do not really need the A/C the wife likes to use. A future more permanent home will need to have that.
We just got a small place to explore the state and help decide whether we want to move the whole mess over there.
I needed a mainland safe state bolt-hole in case Hawaii went total fascist with gun confiscation. They tried last year, seems to be beaten back for the moment, but the bastards continue to plot, am sure of that.
The weather in NY SUCKS unless you like long cold winters, driving on ice, and getting the underside of your car drenched in grit and brine. Oh and the state income tax is pretty high as is the sales tax. And the worst part of living there is New Yorkers.
Idaho ,,,
Yup!
.
My kinda place!
That is true. I lived in deep snow world once and you get a big workout shoveling a foot and a half of wet. Many times I’d wind up just wearing a teeshirt in zero degree weather to keep from sweating.
“Safe State” was my
Big concern,
Weather 2nd. So
Prescott Is a Go!
Kansas definitely sucks! I wouldn’t recommend it to my worst enemy. Lived there, worked there... wished I’d never been there! Let me add to that list... virginia would top my chart, north carolina would be close behind! north carolina is the “new york” of the south. I was never able to find an “honest” person in virginia, but I found enough idiots in north carolina that were stupid enough that you could get your bearings off of their lies. You have to go further south, before you start finding good people... georgia, south carolina...
