Wow…I had no idea they cost so much. No wonder I see so many commercials for them on TV.
I never used one either, but I have researched them for the M-I-L. Yes, you do, because the door opens inwards, and you physically cannot open the door against all of that water pressure until the water drains down to about halfway. Then at that point if you do open the door, you will flood your floor.
I wouldn't recommend one of these walk-in tubs on a second floor bathroom, or on a first floor if the basement ceiling is finished. Massive spills and minor floods seem inevitable with these designs, especially if the grandkids 'play around' in the bathroom with them.
If I make it to 80 I will get me one of those tubs.
Hey, put it out on the back deck.
That would seem like an easy install.
You might like a sauna tent that is not expensive.

“Surely there’s an engineer in this crowd ... I have a very simplistic install idea I need to unload”
My professional opinion:
Pressure and weight considerations.... It’ll cost $5k at least.
Try a steam cabinet — that’ll get you down to $1.5k.
I figure, if a unit could be placed ON TOP of the existing rail, the now average height of about 12 inches could be raised to about 30", with a door.
That means a drop on unit could be manufactured cheaply and sold cheaply.
A walk-in shower conversion ranging from $8 - 18K is a much better investment.

Say What?? You are an extra zero too high. $800 to $1,800 is more in line with removing an old tub and retiling the enclosure.
“That is why, when, we retroed our master bath, we had the tub torn out and replaced with a walk in shower and big tiled sit on bench.”
Yeah, due to the leg problems we did that too. I am only 61 but the ankles, knees and left hip are probably 81.
I can do a shower just by putting in a chair and closing the curtain .... it’s not what I want.
As others have said. A Jacuzzi on the back patio may be about the same cost, or a little cheaper. Especially since you’d alleviate the flooding problems and issue with water weight on the floor.
An outdoor “spa” would be easier to install and would add value to the property.
Here is one for $3000. adding the plumbing would be probably another $1000.

LOL ‘you know you’re a redneck if...’
When I get old enough I’m gonna just go to the ymca for my monthly bath. Bring. A bar of soap, and sit in their hot tub area.
Ell...I’ll give you the one in MIL house we are remodeling. ..but shipping would probably cost too much
That was my thought too, Dave. Why not a nice big walk- or roll-in shower with a comfy spot to sit and bathe, plus an adjustable detachable showerhead set down low? Much nicer and more user-friendly than a tub!
My sister wants a walk-in tub so I have looked into it. I notice the commercials and magazine ads never, ever say how much they cost. They’ll say “$1,500 off” or something, but never give any idea of the cost.
Most home improvement companies will be anywhere from $8,500 - $15,000 or more for a tub to shower conversion. That is often for a polymer shower. If you want new pan, tile or solid surface you are looking at the higher end. Even purchasing Kohler Choreograph solid surface from Lowe's or Home Depot will set you back over $2,000 without the pan. Add in some soap dishes a pan or tile ready base plumbing parts, Adhesives mixers & shower heads & you are well into $3 or $4k before a second of labor is applied. Would you like a shower door? $750 - $2,500.
You can buy some plastic sides a base & possibly the world's cheapest mixer kit for $1,800, but the likelihood of getting anything done under $2,500 to $3,000 with YOU doing all the labor is limited at best.

Our contractor’s parents and his uncle and his wife are a little younger than my wife and I.
However, both of them were into construction, and their bodies, knees, ankles and feet were in worse condition than we were, and they went the route you did and we eventually did.
Also, I had major foot surgery and had to wear a knee high/waterproof boot for several months. My orthopedic surgeon recommended a walk in shower with a built in bench.
So we did it and and my wife got water proof foot/calf/sock gear to put over the boot.
Earlier this year one of my wife’s bros had a stroke and their bath room was a tub. Their doctor/a long time friend recommended a walkin shower and had a couple of contractor recommendations. The pros tore out the old stuff and put in the new walk in the next day.
Her bro and his wife love it.
Has anyone tried one of those inflatable hot tubs? They call them “plug and play” because I guess you just fill with water, plug in the motor and you’re good to go (save normal maintenance and chemical balancing).
