Yes, he was very special.
He was a German shepherd and his name was Dax.
He was so gentle with our kids but was a fierce watch dog.
At six months our 1st child could take walnuts out of his mouth, sit on him, pull his ears and literally maul him, Dax loved him and the other kids as they came along.
They were HIS kids.
He watched over us all.
Late one night I was on the couch reading, didn’t hear a thing, all of a sudden Dax started a low growl, hair on his back stood up and he lunged for the front door, barking.
I heard a bang as the screen slammed shut, never know who was out there but couldn’t have been good.
I never worried when Dax was on guard.

Oh, Gran....that story about Duke gave me chill bumps....no telling how many times he’d saved y’alls lives....with warnings, herding out of harm’s way, etc.
What true and dear friend.

DAX....I meant, so sorry.
Our cousins had a GS, growing up, named Duke.
Not as friendly but VERY protective.
Dax sounds like he was a YUGE sweetheart, to family/friends.

What a good pup. Most of my dogs have been German Shepherds or a mix. Loyal to their owners and great protectors.

Scary! Dogs have amazing hearing. Luckily whoever it was or whatever it was heard him also.
Cooper tries to be intimidating. I tell him he does have a big dog bark, cuz it is pretty deep not like your usual yep yep dogs. But I’m not sure anything would run away if they heard him. Definitely not if they saw him, lol.
