Moïse’s death and the lack of a functioning government also serves as a clear cut signal that the U.S. must play a greater role in Haiti’s future, starting right now.
It’s clear that Haiti will need both immediate and longer-term guidance to move forward in a democratic way. This is a country that started out with weak institutions, and they’re now virtually non-existent. The U.S., as Haiti’s biggest donor, has no choice but to take the lead — with international partners and, importantly, Haiti’s own civil society — to stabilize Haiti.
An international coalition could do immense good very quickly by picking five critical things to focus on so that basic life in Haiti can continue: good roads, reliable electricity, clean water, policing that works and COVID vaccines...
U.S. must also drop the idea of elections in two months. The Biden administration had pinned its hopes on “free and fair” elections, refusing to take into consideration the amount of turmoil in Haiti was going to make that very hard time to pull off.
Transition governments have worked in the past. That’s the best path forward now. Elections must be reset for a date that allows Haiti time to get its footing. Rushing into an election now will only result in more chaos — and an electorate that doesn’t believe in the results.

In 1804, the Haitians killed just about all the White men, women, and children there. I say let em rot in that hellhole.
Listen to you and all of your white supremacizin’.
Haitians don’t need to be taught anything by colonialists.
I like that solution.
No.

Rubbish. Haiti needs reformulation: establishment of the rule of law, property rights, and enforceable contracts. There is more capital tied up in property in Haiti than all the foreign aid they have received in their history. But no one can free up that capital because it is tied up in physical property, with no clear surveyed boundaries, no titles to private ownership, and no banking system that will lend money to entrepreneurs without collateral. Give the people title to the land they live on, a system of contract law that protects commerce from endemic corruption, and the resulting ability to borrow money to start businesses; and watch what happens.
Guarantee they will have refugee flights from Haiti to the US starting next week.
Yep.
Supposedly, we’ve already taken action.
We are not the world’s policemen..
We are not the world’s babysitter..
We are not the world’s nation builder.
We are a generous people who are willing to help with food, water and medicine.
Fight your own political battles and clean your own house...

Send Harris and Hilary, there’s grift to be made!
I’m just surprised that there aren’t democrats calling
for Haitian statehood!
I guess the military industrial complex needs another war since we pulled out of Afghan.
I’m still trying to understand why this is a problem. The prez was a criminal who dissolved parliament and ruled as a dictator. Elections are already scheduled. This just ensures a peaceful transition where the dictator is no longer on the ballot.
We should send people from our border and drop them in haiti. Maybe they will fix it up.
uh...no.

“I’m sure the Biden solution will be to import the entire population of Haiti into the United States.”
As a South Florida resident, I say no thanks.
