Question for the old timers. Were there freaks in the old days?

Posted on 07/05/2021 9:05:16 PM PDT by MNDude

I was just sitting in a Cub's parking lot waiting for my wife. It seemed there was an endless parade of what I would call freaks-- girls with blue hair and pierced noses, men with dreadlocks and huge inserts into big holes in their ears, women covered with nasty tattoos. You know what I mean.

I realize there has always been unusual people, but if you were alive before the 1960's, do you remember if there was a concept of trying to make one look as idiotic as possible?

Early on, The Beatles wore suits and bowed after each song. The parents were horrified by them, however, because of those famous haircuts. Of course, fast forward just a few years and they did look radical, but even then, by today’s standards they were tame.

but when Twiggy” and miniskirts became the rage, promiscuity became the norm.

I don't know... Have you ever seen any of the pre-code movies from the early 1930s?

I was not talking about sexual promiscuity; the issue is appearance and behavior that defies the manners and demeanor intended by the Creator Who formed them.

One doesn't merely pierce one's tongue or lips to put a ring in it, or permanently discolor (and thus devalue) one's skin that doesn't have a contrary attitude that leads to it.

It is spitting at God, for all to see.

Yes, but they were housed in tents along the midway at the state fair. You had Lobster Boy, The Bearded Lady, The Headless Woman, Spider Lady,
The Juggler who had no arms or legs, etc.

Now I know how the British pop band UB40 got their name.

White-collared conservatives, flashing down the street
Pointing their plastic finger at me
They’re hoping soon my kind will drop and die
But I’m going to wave my freak flag high

In the 70’s, if you had your left ear pierced, you were gay;
right ear straight. That was about the jest of it.

“Hippies could stink pretty bad.”

If you encountered a hippy chick, that smelled like patchouli it’s probably because she was using Patchouli to cover body odor, which is what bikers use it for and from what I’ve read the pirates used it as did cowpunchers.

BTW, we called the patchouli crowd “freaks” not hippies.

“We got screwed, blewed and tattooed.”

Interesting take. I always thought it was a Liberty expression.

FNG: “What did you do on liberty?”

SeaDawg: “I got screwed blue, and tattooed.

This could be a thread all on its own.

No, they were a chick band.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I remember thinking of them as a bunch of long haired punks.

Looking back at their appearance on Ed Sullivan and they do look like a group of young though long haired but neat musicians.

Of course Ed ‘couldn’t’ show Elvis below the waist and we all ‘loved’ Johnny Mathis till (most) of us guys figured out who he may have been singing to......

“Judge said go to jail or join the Army where they set most kids straight.”

The Army set them straight? The squad set them straight... 1 or 2 blanket parties usually kept the really bad apples in line.
