The Most COMPLEX Pop Song of All Time
YouTube ^ | June 23, 2021 | Rick Beato

Posted on 06/25/2021 2:49:24 PM PDT by Yardstick

In this video, Rick Beato analyzes the song "Never Gonna Let You Go" by Sergio Mendez, pointing out the twists and turns of its super complicated chord progression. The song was released in 1983 and he's using it to illustrate the loss of complexity in modern pop songs, a theme he's been working for the past few months.

You NAILED IT! Still one of my all time favorites! Bought it when it was first released.

I just float away on this one: "Sergio Mendes - Barabare (click safe link)"

Two more brilliant offerings: There is so much going on in these pieces they really are exemplary of the incredible pool of talent and musical genius that Brasil has brought us.

Arlindo Cruz - O Bem

Exaltasamba - Gamei

Simple 4/4 time. Nothing complex about it.

Nice. The first one is making me think of Baby You’re My Destiny by Taj Mahal:

Different styles but I think a Venn diagram would have some overlap.

“Listened to a pop song yesterday. The singer repeated a four-word refrain for two solid minutes. Four words!!!!!”

Are you sure it wasn’t Contemporary “Christian” drivel?

Oh wow, that was pretty cool - thanks for the link!

The style in my lower two links is called “Pagode” or street samba. Currently one of the more popular forms of pop music. It’s waning these days, I’ve been following it for over 30 of their golden years. Hundreds and hundreds of artists and bands. Amazing time for great music. I just couldn’t listen to American pop when rap started to become popular so I made my switch in the early 90’s.

First time I’ve heard the name. It has a smoothness about it that is really nice.
