I am guessing that pence had the option to send contested states back to the state legislature. It would have prolonged things. Not so sure these states would have done audits. Maybe recounting the same fake ballots.

Pence had no option to send anything back to state legislatures. On January 6th he was presiding over a joint session of Congress, which means that only CONGRESS had the authority to do anything.

Legislators from five states asked Pence for 10 days to review the legality of the certification .... you know, the ones the Constiution gives sole authority to. This was doable since Jan 6 is an arbitrary date set by Congress, not the Constitution.

I don't know what or who gave Pence the authority, but he denied the requests from the state legislators.

He also stopped all objections when Congress reconvened after the "insurrection". Again, the authority to do this remains a mystery.
