The Democrats' identity politics minefield
The Week ^ | 6/10/21 | W. James Antle III

Rep. Ilhan Omar has once again exposed a rift in the Democratic caucus. A dozen House Democrats rebuked the polarizing Minnesotan for appearing to equate the United States and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban, adding that her comparison "at best discredits one's intended argument and at worst reflects deep-seated prejudice."

Omar's fellow members of the Squad were incensed. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) alleged that, by "skipping private conversations" and publicly chastising Omar in a way that will likely draw news coverage, they put Omar in danger. "Freedom of speech doesn't exist for Muslim women in Congress. The benefit of the doubt doesn't exist for Muslim women in Congress," protested Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), who accused Democratic leaders of "relentless, exclusive tone policing of Congresswomen of color."

Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) went further. "I'm not surprised when Republicans attack Black women for standing up for human rights," she tweeted. "But when it's Democrats, it's especially hurtful. We're your colleagues. Talk to us directly. Enough with the anti-Blackness and Islamophobia."

This comes not long after high-profile progressives found themselves unable to condemn anti-Semitic attacks, allegedly provoked by recent fighting between Israel and Hamas, without also denouncing Islamophobia.

The Democratic conference hails from a wider variety of immigrant backgrounds than previous generations, making unity on thorny issues in the Middle East more difficult. But there have also been changes on the left that make it harder for them to support a wealthy Western country like Israel in a fight with Muslim people of color. Where Jews fit on the intersectionality spectrum is complicated. Progressives have an easy template for dealing with racial and religious disputes that pit minorities against white racists, but a harder time adjudicating disputes that arise between different minority groups.

It's okay.

It's a cultural thing.

Democrats identity problems are obvious. They can’t tell what a male and female is.

The problem with Democratic party identity politics is, the various identities are not compatible. Because they are all inside the larger party, they have to somehow get along, but they are at odds with one another. Blacks are insulted that gays compare their “plight” with how blacks were treated by the larger society sixty years ago. (By the way, Blacks, all that has changed. If you’re being held back today it’s not due to racism. It’s due to YOU.)

As another example, lesbians have vanished...overnight. When Ellen DeGeneres suddenly stopped being a lesbian, it was news. This is because the only reason this talentless woman has a career is, she identified as a lesbian and that was worth getting your own show. That’s right, today the only way Carrol Burnett or Lucile Ball could get a show is if they were lesbians, or some other victim group that needs propping up with “equal” representation.

Trans women complained bitterly that lesbian women would not have sex with them. One even said they should be “forced” to have sex with them because they identified as women. But, if trans (fake) women wanted to have sex with lesbians…women, they’d actually just be heterosexual men dressed up as women. Since, in the liberal pantheon of who’s who in the victim structure, trans men are shiny and new and lesbians are old hat and lesbians will support democrats regardless…they can be sacrificed on the alter of political correctness. Whoever sets victim theology reasoned that the thing that had to go in this dispute was lesbians. To describe yourself as a lesbian meant you weren’t accepting of trans women…therefore lesbians had to quit being lesbians and become instead, queers. It would be interesting to know how they got the word out, but…BOOM!...overnight, no more lesbians.

It sucks to be on the outside of the victimhood hierarchy. Whenever the next victim group comes along, and, it will, then maybe it’s the trans women who will suffer demotion. Blacks were demoted for Hispanics and Hispanics were demoted by the alphabet crowd, and, now individual letters in the alphabet crowd are getting demoted. This would be entertaining if it didn’t affect bakers and wedding planners who don’t want to promote this insanity.

If one is free to speak, one is free to be criticized.

She’s betting she’s a safe bet.

As a male muslim it would have been much harder to get elected.

For some reason, Americans give muslim women a pass.

That’s actually quite dangerous and it’s the women who raise the hellions that grow up into killers.

“The hand that rocks the cradle....” is not a saying for nothing.

I wouldn’t worry too much for the welfare of the left. The Bolsheviks show that you can mend rifts as long as your only driving principle is exercise of power. You just hide the dissidence or assassinate the dissidents.
