Aren’t adult beverages available other places besides pubs where this happened?
I wouldn’t even know, I haven’t called in sick since..thinking. I think it was 2011.
My old roommate was a cop and he had been in a serious accident when a lady ran stop sign a T-boned him in his patrol car. He was supposed to be off duty for a week with whiplash but had to go to the pharmacy to pick up some medication for his asthma.
By the time he got back to his house his chief was calling him because some dick head cop saw him driving.
He took off his neck brace, ate a hand full of advil and reported to his shift that night.
JThis is also an example of how cutthroat cops can be when one of them thinks another one is getting something they should get.
One can feel very sick in the am...feel good enough in the afternnon...but not good enough to drive. A guy who has lung issues shouldnt be driving professionally that day.
But he could have felt good enough to sit in a pub...not much more. But don’t lie. That was his big mistake.
I promoted the ones who did double duty and were reliable. The two who often called in sick, I gave them sh*t work. Of course they complained, but I cited their not being reliable by taking off too much time. Not enough reason to fire them.
Some people call in sick for therapy purposes. Can’t say that I blame them. Those that don’t are chumps. I always lived too close to work to do that stuff. Saved a lot of time(commute).
First thing I thought of on seeing the headline.

For the non-video inclined...Ferris Bueller’s doorbell recording.
Yep
The alcohol should keep the Mohammedans away.
I knew a guy that went to work sick. His theory was you had to be someplace if you’re sick, so why not be at work. Then he used his sick days when he was well as days off.
Problem is, if he lied that easily about one thing, how can you trust an employee like that?
If you are too sick to work, then stay home.
His situation is his own doing. If he hadn’t been out, he wouldn’t have been ratted on, regardless of whether the other guy was right or wrong to do that.
If the benefits of employment provided for so many sick days, why would anyone care whether this chap was really sick or not? It's a paid day off no matter. No note from the doctor or your wife is necessary. And what was the guy who squealed on him doing in the pub himself?
When I was younger, I used to call in every once in a while when I woke up and felt especially good to call my employer to say I wasn't going in. I wasn't "sick" as in ill, but just sick of going to work everyday. I needed a break. I would take a day off when I felt good and wanted to stay home. I took a sick day and nobody cared otherwise.
I'm retired now and I spent my last twenty years working for myself, so I could do what I wanted. Played golf every Friday and didn't have to feel guilty about playing hooky from work because I was my own boss.
But now I have upper respiratory issues that cause me to be short of breath after sleeping all night, so I need to do a couple of breathing treatments before I feel good enough to get moving in the mornings sometimes.
How does that differ from not feeling well and calling in a sick day to stay home (or go to the pub or pharmacy or grocery store or the movie theater, etc.)? It's not any different.
A judge and a court ruled in his favor so there's the defining answer. He was within his rights to go have a couple of drinks whilst he was called into work sick.
Why should the government have a say if a private business fires some one for cause?
Five year old article using obsolete data. Get up to date on the technology.
Paid time off?
Because someone has to be the arbiter of interpersonal relations lest we have blood running in the streets.
What really bothers me about this is that the guy called in sick and was caught going to a pub.
Then they fired him for going to pubs, drinking, and smoking with a ling co dition on numerous occasions. wow, how did one 45-minute trip to the pub one a sick day end up being all that?
Sorry, I have seen too many of those corporate-type situations where one employee is practically shadowed and written up with the absolute worst interpretation of his actions so they can fire him while the sycophants do the same or worse things, which are all overlooked by the powers that be.
It doesn’t do any good to tell the truth to people like that anyway. They will get you one way or the other no matter what they have to do.
That's how the court got involved. They didn't just arbitrarily step into the disagreement and rule without a plaintiff.
Because employment is a contract that’s governed by employment law. Try paying less than the minimum wage or requiring overtime without paying the legal rate and see if you don’t think government has a say. In this case the judge didn’t believe that the employer proved that he had sufficient cause to fire him. The UK is pretty socialist so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they don’t tend towards the “at will” mindset towards employment.
