For my money, the above image of a Chinese civilian fearlessly standing down an entire column of Red Army tanks—in Tiananmen Square in 1989—remains one the most powerful and emotive images ever to have been captured.

To this day, it invariably makes my American heart swell with pride—as it should for any freedom-loving individual!
