COP SHORTAGE: Asheville NC Police Will No Longer Respond to Theft Calls Under $1000, other crimes.

Dead people will no longer receive a funeral escort from the Asheville Police Department.

Neither will police respond to calls reporting theft under $1,000, fraud, identity theft or simple assaults.

The Asheville Police Dept. blamed the cutback on services as a result of a severe shortage of officers. Since 2020 the department has lost 30 percent of its officers and detectives.

Police Chief David Zack told the local newspaper that delayed response times — for crimes, such as fraud and many thefts under $1,000 — and even more service cuts are likely as APD struggles to fill vacancies that now amount to 30% of the 238 sworn officer positions.

“This is what it looks like when you’re down this much, when you lose 50% of your detectives,” Zack told the three City Council members of the Public Safety Committee June 1.

I imagine this is a call for any thief outside the area. A simple invitation to steal lots of stuff from cars, yard, sheds etc... If I was planning a vacation to this location.. I’d cancel it immediately. The article points out that the department lost half of the detectives. I can only think that with half the detectives left, the rate of homicides, rapes, aggravated assaults, burglaries, strong arm robberies etc.. will increase with little arrests.

That is only half the problem. To many people a 41000 or less is s lot of money. If they think the police will no longer get involved then they will take matters into their own hands...assaults on perps and suspected perps are going to go way up.

Asheville is the hippy enclave of NC. It is a laboratory of what happens when liberalism runs government. It will be interesting to follow the op-eds, next elections and see if they can come to their senses.

I was a journalist in Asheville, years ago. There was a pro-prayer movement that some of the local churches had a rally for at one of the public high school football stadiums. It drew a LOT of people.

Then the local witches and warlocks decided that they had to have their own rally at the same football stadium, public accommodation and all that. So one week there was "We Still Pray" and a week and a half later there was "We Still Work Magic".

The surrounding area is still solidly conservative. But Asheville itself is a loss.

My brother, 10 years ago before he got his act together, was a delivery driver for a company that delivered frozen food that people had pre ordered. He delivered to Biltmore Forrest which is very exclusive & also to housing projects in the city. One time he was delivering in the projects & guys hanging out shot rubber bullets at him. When he gets to the address he finds people getting high & watching rap videos. There was also a couple having sex right in front of everyone. He was so happy to get out of there. He quit shortly after that.
