Dead people will no longer receive a funeral escort from the Asheville Police Department.
Neither will police respond to calls reporting theft under $1,000, fraud, identity theft or simple assaults.
The Asheville Police Dept. blamed the cutback on services as a result of a severe shortage of officers. Since 2020 the department has lost 30 percent of its officers and detectives.
Police Chief David Zack told the local newspaper that delayed response times — for crimes, such as fraud and many thefts under $1,000 — and even more service cuts are likely as APD struggles to fill vacancies that now amount to 30% of the 238 sworn officer positions.
“This is what it looks like when you’re down this much, when you lose 50% of your detectives,” Zack told the three City Council members of the Public Safety Committee June 1.

The should have kept 100 percent of the cops and gotten rid of 30 percent of the city council.
The death of the West right there. Reminds me of the group photo of the EU defense ministers-all women holding mixed drinks with umbrellas in them with the defense minister of Russia and china showing mean, grizzled, battle hardened men.

Soon they’ll only respond to murders of 2 or more. Speeding at 30+ miles over the speed limit. Arson only if home is 3,000 sf or larger.

i think every politician in asheville should have their addresses posted and emails sent out when they aren’t at home. I am sure they have mounds of stuff under $1000.

Zack has only been there over a year but is emboldened enough to not just declare lawlessness on A-ville merchants but their leaders. Zow!
We stayed in Asheville last December. While some parts are gentrified and restored, others parts are very poor. In other words, you have extremes of wealth and affluence with hard poverty close by. This contrast continues somewhat outside of Asheville as well. We went North on the Blue Ridge Parkway for twenty miles and passed wooden shacks, like in Dorothea Lange photos, and then found ourselves in a little town with no less than six pottery studios, three coffee roasters, and full of new age silliness.
So, if one of these fine lady council women report 100.00 stolen from them, how fast do the police respond?

Just watch. Thefts of around $900 will mysteriously skyrocket, and no one in the media will know why.
To thiefs: this is your chance. You won’t be caught. Go and take all that you want from those who earn it. The liberals actually want you to do it, so nothing to worry about. As for people who actually work to earn their money, just remember all this next time you go vote.
