Why electric cars will take over sooner than you think
I know, you probably haven't even driven one yet, let alone seriously contemplated buying one, so the prediction may sound a bit bold, but bear with me.
We are in the middle of the biggest revolution in motoring since Henry Ford's first production line started turning back in 1913.
And it is likely to happen much more quickly than you imagine.
Many industry observers believe we have already passed the tipping point where sales of electric vehicles (EVs) will very rapidly overwhelm petrol and diesel cars.
It is certainly what the world's big car makers think.
Jaguar plans to sell only electric cars from 2025, Volvo from 2030 and last week the British sportscar company Lotus said it would follow suit, selling only electric models from 2028.

I think the key issue is generating a whole lot of electricity from somewhere. Solar and wind aren’t going to be the solution. We need more power plants. Are we going to build more power plants? No? Than EV won’t take off sooner than I think.
Henry Ford had unlimited domestic sources for iron and steel to build his engines and drive trains from. Not so these electrics. Key raw materials are lithium and cobalt for the batteries, and copper for the motors and the charging infrastructure. Of these only copper is mined in economic quantities in North America. Lithium and cobalt come from China and Africa, (and the Chinese are locking up control of the African cobalt mines at an alarming rate). You have to drive an EV 120,000 miles before it's overall carbon footprint equals a gasoline vehicle, and that's assuming the battery lasts that long, which is unlikely.
The USA also had virtually unlimited domestic sources for oil to make gasoline from, and existing infrastructure, (waterways, rail and roads) to deliver it anywhere it was wanted. California and Texas are both anticipating brown-outs and rolling blackouts this summer. Now imagine adding a million cars on charge to that demand. Not to mention expanding the grid to deliver increased power to every village and farm. (More copper - MUCH more copper!)

Electric cars just move the pollution to a location that isn’t readily obvious.

We need a crash program to develop and build nextgen high-safety and reliability nuclear plants, probably involving thorium. Wind and solar remain a pipe dream and have their own environmental issues. We need reliable on-demand electrical power.
600 miles in a day doesn’t mean I go nonstop. I usually stop at a bar at least twice in between. Just to break up the monotony.
Like you, I like to buy used cars. I’ve been tinkering with cars and motorcycles since I was 13, and I have the knack for picking a good one. This skill serves me well. Two of my cars are ‘02 and ‘04 and will easily last another ten years. You cannot do this with an EV. What you are buying is largely a battery, with a defined useful life. This will force me and everyone else to come into line and buy new only. Gone will be the days when you can find a bargain.

Companies are already offering cars with lifetime warranties.
Experts are talking about batteries so good that ‘used batteries’ could be put into new cars.
Yeah. People develop there own work-arounds. A five gallon can of gas can come in handy. That option doesn’t exist with electrics. I can see people swiping the charger out of other cars at stores. That won’t sit well. I foresee a lot of delivery services popping up.

a few years ago when hurricane irma was approaching florida and they evacuated parts of south florida all of the major routes heading north turned into a crawl, even the back roads where i live...
electric cars would be obstacles in that scenario...
You didn’t address the issue you raised.
It will flip from Evil Tobacco companies to EVil companies for bottom feeding lawyers and states to sue for the pollution the green energy will leave behind.
