A man fishing on an a New Brunswick, Canada, river noticed some unusual activity in the water and ended up rescuing a red squirrel struggling with some bass.
Matt Myers said he was fishing for striped bass on the Miramichi River when he saw a group of bass splashing at the surface of the water.
"I was watching some splashing and all of a sudden I looked to the side and I thought 'What is that in the middle of this spawning activity?'" Myers told CBC News.
He said he initially thought the bass were attacking a stick, but he then realized they were nipping at an animal.
"Lo and behold, it's this poor little red squirrel in the middle of all this spawning activity," Myers said. "The bass appeared to be coming up and nipping at it."
Myers used his paddle to scoop the squirrel up onto his kayak and gave it a ride back to shore.
He said the fish had likely confused the squirrel's splashing for a female preparing to lay her eggs.
"I don't think they were trying to eat it," Myers said.
What a cute story. Unfortunately a hawk immediately swooped down, snatched the little red squirrel and ate him for supper.
Poor little fella! I have a bunch of young ones that were born recently in a big oak tree in my back yard. They’re curious and are getting into everything.
I pulled an ungrateful mole out of a lake once. A crow came down and picked it up when I left.
Amazing the squirrel stayed in the kayak to shore!
Time for the meme of the hawk attacking George Costanza holding the squirrel in Kramer’s apartment.
We don’t have a deal with the squirrels.
Great picture

Now those bass will starve to death. They waited and waited for something to eat and some bozo snatched it away from them. Speciesist bastard!
Once, while fishing a farm pond in Virginia, I saw a fallen tree limb lying in the water half in and half out. At the very end was an acorn sitting on the limb about an inch from where it dipped below the surface.
A squirrel tentatively hopped out on the limb and made its careful way from the tree lined shore to the end of the limb and grabbed the acorn.
Just then, there was a huge splash as a largemouth bass, at least 10lbs came out of the water and grabbed the squirrel and disappeared out of sight in a swirl and an eddy.
Most remarkable thing I every saw!
After about 5 minutes, I heard a small splash over by the limb and the big bass was back, gently placing another acorn on the end of the limb! :)
Tree rat.
The squirrels eat all of my pomegranates. F them. They are vermin, nothing more than rats with fluffy tails.
I prefer that nature takes its course. Especially when it comes to red squirrels.
Then the squirrel bit the guy and gave him rabies
Cut it up and use it as bait.
For sure.
Aww. Thank heavens for men like this with a β€οΈ
