Where's the best place to get fish and chips in Santa Cruz? That is what one Redditor wanted to know when they posted to the Santa Cruz subreddit.
"I've been craving a good fish & chips for months, where is the best in Santa Cruz (or surrounding areas)?" asked user /u/cute_dog_alert.
Fish and chips is a dish consisting of any type of fish fried in batter and served with fries and was invented in the United Kingdom in the 1860s.
The top recommended location was the Scrumptious Fish and Chips food truck.
"They reminded me of my one trip to England 20 years ago. Big chunks of fresh fish in a light batter. By far the best inn (sic) town," wrote user /u/eyeonik1.
Other restaurants that made the list were Phil's Fish Market in Moss Landing, Stagnaros Bros on the wharf, Carpos, and Parish which serves a beer-battered salmon.

I haven't been to Carpo's in years. I've never had it at Stagnaros, and I don't think I had it the one time I went to Parish. Santa Cruz isn't really a fish and chip town, like Monterey is.
I loved the Crow’s Nest for smoked salmon appetizer and the view in back! Haven’t been there since the ‘80’s!
Going to the wharf was always a beating because of the tourists, so I rarely went to Stagnaros. I used to eat at Carpo’s quite a bit, though I don’t recall having fish and chips there.
You’re right about Monterey being a fish and chip town. Probably due to its history as a commercial fishing hub.
Why go into the Vortex of Mass Psychosis for any reason at all.....much less for fish and chips...,.if you do, however, just be sure to request that with your order, they hold the sides of smirk and entitlement..,,
It’s official, I’m now starving. Fish and chips sounds amazing right now.
“May I take your order.”
“Yes, I’ll have the fish and chips without the fish.”
“Um, so you want an order of fries?”
“No. I want an order of fish and chips without the fish.”
“You don’t like our fish?”
“No. They’re rude. They come over to my house and don’t use coasters.”
Billy’s Chowder House here in Los Gatos closed down. Bummer. They had a Captain’s Platter (fried oysters, clams, and fish with fries) that was outstanding.
The absolute best Fish & Chips (Cod) I’ve ever eaten (MY favorite dish BTW) is in San Diego at Tom Ham’s.
Haven’t been out there for years, but when I lived out there, my benchmark for Fish and Chips is up the road in Half Moon Bay - Flying Fish Grill - https://www.flyingfishgrill.net/
Outstanding Fish tacos also.
All I know is that this thread has made me hungry.
Santa Cruz. Last time I was there about 12 years ago it was ok in the daytime. But at night it was like a zombie movie. Bums and young dope addled college age homeless everywhere. I can only imagine the bum camps there now.
That’s the place with the outdoor fire pit, right?
Well, reading that just made me hungry.
No, that’s Taco Bell.
Oops, sorry, showing my age. Think I’ll go order a Bellbeefer.
I love Fish and Chips. I’ve eaten it in England and was highly disappointed. The best Fish and Chips I’ve ever had was in Savannah GA a couple months ago. Churchill’s Pub just off the river. An enormous slab of fried cod, perfectly cooked and a pile of fries. Malt vinegar and tartar sauce completed the meal. I’m serious when I tell you that the slab of fried fish extended off both sides of a large plate and was at least 2 inches thick at the gill end.
I think Walleye and Halibut make the best fish and chips. Until Minnesota gets fixed, Walleye is about they only good thing there.
