Cops Tackled a Grandma With Dementia Picking Flowers, Bodycam Footage Shows

A 73-year-old grandmother of nine was picking wildflowers on the side of the road in Loveland, Colorado, last summer when a local cop got out of his patrol vehicle and told her to stop—beginning a police encounter that ultimately left her with broken bones, bruised, and traumatized.

Loveland Police Officer Austin Hopp had been driving behind Karen Garner with his overhead lights on because she was accused of shoplifting from a nearby Walmart. But Garner did not appear to notice, according to body camera footage published by Garner’s attorney Wednesday.

Garner has dementia and sensory aphasia, an inability to understand spoken and written speech, according to a federal civil rights lawsuit filed on her behalf this week against the city of Loveland and three officers involved in Garner’s arrest.

Hopp asked Garner why she didn’t stop after he activated his lights and siren, at which point Garner gave him a blank expression, said something unintelligible, and started to move away.

“No, no, no,” Hopp said, according to bodycam footage.

Hopp then grabbed the 80-pound woman, threw her to the grass, and twisted her arms behind her back, bodycam footage shows. Garner was still clutching a handful of wildflowers. A second cop, Daria Jalali, arrived within minutes and assisted in the arrest.

Then, despite Garner’s evident distress and small stature, Hopp pushed her left arm “painfully upward,” according to body camera footage and the lawsuit. Police repeatedly threw her on the ground, and hog-tied her on the side of the road—a controversial restraint that’s been banned by some police departments.(snip)

“I’m going home,” Garner cried repeatedly.

As a result of the incident, Garner was left with a dislocated shoulder, a fractured humerus bone, and a sprained wrist, the lawsuit alleges. She was covered with bruises by the time she arrived at

But don't worry, when the SHTF and the war starts, the cops are Patriots and will be on our side... /s

They made their position clear a long time ago.

I see. So, let me get this straight; when police confront shoplifting suspects, they’re not to arrest them but instead, are to send them home or maybe just drive the suspects themselves?

Should they stop at Starbucks and pick up a Frappucinno for the ride?

Your appeal to authority doesn’t impress me.

I would be curious to hear how police should confront and arrest shoplifting suspects particularly those who refuse to obey lawful orders to - you know - actually stop? I’m all ears how the boys in your family did it, back in the day.

An 80 lb 5 ft woman is about the size of a 12 year old girl. Not exactly threatening size.

Meanwhile the cop is wheezing like he just ran 5 miles. The copy is totally out of shape.

At one point in the video, a citizen comes over to see what the cop is doing because from a distance he says it looks like the cop is roughing up a young kid.

Question for all of the cop haters: What are the police supposed to do? She shoplifted from Wal-Mart. She ignored the police officer’s lights and sirens. She ignored his verbal command to stop. So when someone commits a crime, the police are just supposed to say “Pretty please, stop”? And if the person doesn’t stop, they should just let them go? BTW, how is the cop supposed to know that she has dementia? I’m sorry. I know this is unfortunate but, for Pete’s Sake, the cop is just doing his job.

Why not, if it’s an old lady with dementia picking flowers on the side of the road?

Was Hopp out of breath from being obese or from a raging hard on? I think he sounds like like the asshole who truly enjoys power over and the ability to hurt others.

3 mentally, emotionally, and physically unfit officers of the law that make people despise cops of all kinds. They all should hang their heads in shame and have badges removed, and never be allowed in positions of authority anywhere.

Do you know what it takes to make a conservatorship happen, including removing an elder's freedom by taking away their car keys? I do. I helped have my grandmother put into one, and having her keys taken from her. In a moment of cognition, she agreed. The next day she wanted her keys to go see her sister, not remembering the day before.

To have a conservatorship established takes months, at a minimum. (And she wasn't driving.)

Doing his job? That level of force was not required or necessary. If members of this forum can’t agree on that after watching the video and seeing her bruises there’s no hope. Where is the humanity.

She was obviously a violent threat to him.

What kind of cops do they hire there?

So, the full story is that she shoplifted something from WalMart. The police officer “lit her up” with lights and sirens, signaling her to stop. She doesn’t stop. The cop then gets out of his car and orders her to stop, but she keeps going. He gave her multiple chances and she walked away. She was a suspect in a shoplifting incident. What’s the cop supposed to do? Just let a suspected thief go? Sorry, I know its unfortunate—if the dementia story is true. But how would the cop know that she has dementia?

Yeah, but that is the problem isnt it? Cops should be (I believe that they are) instructed on dealing with the mentall ill and those that can’t communicate.

At the very least, since no threat was posed by the grandmother (no weapon, no attack and unlikely to run due to her age), the officer could have simply waited for back up to arrive before further attempts at the situation.

To the extent that she got injured, it was her fault, not the officers. She fought the officer. We pay the cops to arrest criminal suspects. If someone stole something from your property and the police nabbed the suspect, but then decided to let her walk away b/c she said “I’m going home,” you would be ticked. If she has dementia, what the hell is she doing walking around by a highway? It’s always blame the cops with a lot of freepers. How about blame the other side for once?

Cops should be smart enough to figure out how to de-escalate the situation.

Here’s a pro/tip: Don’t believe ANYTHING you read in the craprag that is Vice.com. It’s a cesspool of liberal stupidity.

She wasn’t ‘picking flowers on the side of the road. She was shopping at Walmart. What kind of shopping? The LIFTING kind. A Walmart employee confronted her about the items she took, she ‘got physical’ and the store called the police. The police found her walking on the side of the road and made several attempts to get her to stop by - as he says - ‘lighting her up.’ She doesn’t stop, so he gets out and again tells her to stop, which she doesn’t do. So, quite correctly, he’s had enough and arrests her.

That’s how enforcing laws works. Old people don’t get to shoplift. Ladies don’t get to shoplift. Dementia patients don’t get shoplift.
